"Even if I can't promise you true love, at least I promise not to have any other woman besides you." Emily Desmond believed those words spoken directly by her husband, Maximilian Altenberg. Even though Max didn't love her sincerely, Emily thought it wouldn't matter and their marriage could still be happy, with just love from her. Hoping that one day Max would understand how truly she loved him. But that naive hope didn't last long. That's because Aurora Everhart, Max's first love, comes to them with a child. A boy who looked very much like Max. Max also said he would include Aurora's child's name in the family register. After hearing those words, Emily was determined to leave him and divorce him.

Chapter 1 A Happy Wedding

A Happy Wedding?

"You two are now officially husband and wife."

The priest's words made the man and woman facing each other stare at each other. If the woman looked at the man who had now become her husband with a sweet smile, it differed from the man who only looked flat at her. Emily Desmond would never have thought that the day would come when she would become the wife of the man she loved, Maximillian Altenberg.

Her heart beat fast at the sight of the man before her, who was now officially her husband. Even though she clearly knew the background of the marriage. Indeed, the marriage between Emily and Maximillian wasn't based on mutual love. In this position, only Emily felt that love, while Maximillian didn't feel the same way at all.

Their marriage was made possible by the agreement between the Altenberg and Desmond families.

"Emily!"

Emily raised her face to look at Maximillian, taller than her. "Yes, what's wrong?"

"You know best that I grew up watching my lonely mother all my life. I will never fill this mansion with women like the previous head of the family. Although I can't promise you that love, I swear I won't bring another woman into this mansion. Only you will be my wife."

Emily responded with a faint smile. It was a promise she remembered well when the marriage vows were done. It was true that she knew the most about Maximillian's family background. Where the man had been discriminated against by his own family. His own father was unfair to his mother and himself. Other family members behaved the same way, just because his mother was a woman from the village and didn't have a high profile like his father's other wives.

It culminated when his mother died at the hands of his first brother, making Maximillian's anger peak at that time. He took revenge by transferring the power of the Altenberg family to himself. This made all the Altenbergs who hated him and his mother go bankrupt because all of Altenberg's wealth was under his control.

"Well, even though he didn't say he loved me. But he has sworn that I am the only one who will stand by his side. That promise is enough for me. Because if he doesn't love me, I love him more. Our future will definitely remain happy." Emily said in her heart as she continued to think of positive things for her marriage in the future.

A few years passed

"That's right, you're pregnant. Congratulations Madam!"

When Emily heard that, she immediately smiled happily. She had one person in mind to whom she would tell the happy news: "Max! I have to go see Max and tell him about this."

Emily ran to her husband's office. She was happy to be pregnant again after her last miscarriage. After losing her first child, Emily had to deal with extreme grief. Previously, the family's private doctor said it might be difficult for her to have another child. Because of this, Maximillian kept his distance from her. Emily didn't blame Maximillian's changing attitude towards her. Because it meant that her husband also really wanted a child.

"Madam, you have to be careful now. You are pregnant." her personal servant, Zhoumi, looked at her with a worried look.

"It's okay, I want to meet Max quickly."

Emily wondered how happy Maximillian would be when he heard the news that she was pregnant again.

However, when she reached the front of her husband's workroom, her assistant, Felix Turmen, stopped her.

"I want to see Max; please tell him I'm coming."

Felix looked at her doubtfully as if he was hiding something from her. Then, Emily knew the meaning of Felix's gaze when she heard the conversation from inside Maximillian's workroom.

"Aurora is returning to Eldoria." It was Maximillian's voice.

Hearing that name took Emily by surprise. Of course, she knew the name of the woman who was her husband's ex-lover. Aurora Everhart, the first love of Maximillian Altenberg, had broken up with Maximillian because she was forced by her family to marry another man. Why did she suddenly come back?

"Aurora will be returning from Belmont the day after tomorrow, so prepare everything perfectly."

Her heart sank hearing her own husband's words. Wasn't their relationship over? Why was Maximillian planning to prepare a welcome for his former lover?

Emily bit her lip to hold back the pain in her heart.

Seeing her only silent with a tense expression made Zhoumi look at her pityingly. She knew pretty well the story behind the marriage between the two.

Felix, too, saw the changed look on Emily's face, which made him feel bad. "Madam, should I tell you about your arrival?"

"No, no. Don't tell Max that I'm here."

"Yes, Madam."

Emily tightened her fists. Her plan to tell Maximillian about her pregnancy was ruined, and her mood was already ruined after hearing the name 'Aurora' again. She turned her body around and walked away from the place, followed by Zhoumi behind her.

Arriving at the room, Emily sat on the chair with a lacklustre face. It made Zhoumi couldn't bear to look at her.

"Madam, are you alright?"

"Zhoumi, you heard it too, right? Couldn't I have heard it wrong earlier?"

"Madam, I'm sorry!" Zhoumi bowed her head as if it was her fault.

"No, it wasn't your fault. Zhoumi, I want to be alone now."

"Yes, Madam." Zhoumi walked out of Emily's room.

For the umpteenth time, Emily let out a heavy sigh.

"Why did Aurora have to return at a time like this?"

Seven years ago, Aurora left the city of Eldoria to become the fourth wife of the Xavier family. As long as she was the wife of that family, she couldn't leave Belmont City until her husband passed away. But why, how could she return to Eldoria City now?

"If only she came back and stood before Max...."

Emily's heart ached even more at the thought of that happening.

"Even though Max married me after Aurora left, he has never said love to me. If a couple who experienced an unwanted separation reunites, imagine how deep the feelings they have right now?"

Her stomach suddenly contracted. It made her remember what Doctor Araide had said earlier. Because she had experienced a miscarriage, she had to pay more attention to her body condition in particular. She shouldn't be stressed and over-exert herself.

"My dear kid. I'm sorry, kid. I didn't think of you for a while. Now that I won't, I'll pay more attention to your condition. I'm not alone anymore."

Dinner came

At this time, Emily sat down opposite Maximillian to have dinner together. Emily looked at Maximillian, who was silent while looking the other way.

"Is it possible that he's thinking about Aurora right now? Has he ever, at least once, thought of me to the point of being lost in such thoughts?" Her heart ached at the thought.

Dinner began. Until Maximillian's voice broke the silence.

"I heard you came to my workroom today."

Emily's hand, which was holding the cutlery, stopped. She thought Maximillian was asking this just for formality. "Yeah, I was there earlier. But I heard you were busy, so I'd rather not bother you."

"Okay."

The answer was only that short. That was the extent of the conversation between the two lately. Emily hoped Maximillian would ask her again why she had come earlier. But Maximillian didn't seem to care about that.

"If I were Aurora, would she also not care like this? I know this is an evil thought. But is it possible that my heart has been rebelling all day because I just heard the name of the woman I've forgotten? I should have told him about this pregnancy right away. But Max is in a sensitive state right now." Emily said in her rumbling heart.

Emily had known Maximillian for a very long time. She could immediately tell just by looking at his expression. Looking at Maximillian, who had been silent, she strongly believed that he was currently thinking about Aurora.

"Umm, Max?"

Hearing his name being called made Max look up at Aurora. "Why?"

"I heard that Miss Aurora is returning to Eldoria. Is that true?" Emily took a lot of consideration in asking that question.

She could see the slightly surprised face. "How did you know that?"

"I heard it by chance while passing by your workroom."

"I see. What you heard is true; Aurora will return the day after tomorrow."

Hearing Maximillian's answer directly made her heart ache even more. She gripped the dress she was wearing tightly.

"Even though Miss Aurora is the wife of Mr. Xavier. But how could she come back? She didn't come for a short visit but completely returned to this city?"

Maximillian was silent for a moment before letting out a rough sigh. "If I'm not mistaken, about three weeks ago, Mr Xavier passed away due to his chronic heart disease, so his estate was left entirely to his first child. The wife, who has no offspring with him, was free to leave the house."

"In that case, Miss Aurora's status was restored as the Everhart family's daughter, right?"

"That's right; she will be called back Aurora Everhart, daughter of the Everhart family."

That answer made Emily's heart very uneasy. She clutched the dress she was wearing tightly.

"If she returns as the wife of the Xavier family, she definitely won't be able to have a relationship with Max," Emily said in her heart.

"Emily, this is a problem you don't need to think about."

Maximillian's words made Emily look at him surprised. How could it not be something she should think about? Her husband's ex-lover would be back in their midst.

"I have no intention of retracting my promise to you."

Maximillian's words made Emily reflect on the promise her husband had made to her when they finished saying their wedding vows. However, it made Emily think of something else. If Maximillian hadn't made that promise, what would he have done?

"Nothing will change even if Aurora returns. Because I have no intention of making this mansion noisy with amorous quarrels. My wife is only you."

Emily should have calmed down when she heard that explanation. However, seeing Maxmillian's expression after saying it hurt Emily's heart. Maximillian's expression, which looked sad and lowered his gaze, made Emily think that her husband was saying the opposite of his heart.

Emily forced a smile to look okay. "Alright, I understand. You don't have to worry."

After that dinner, Emily thought there was no chance of either her or Maximillian meeting Aurora. However, that day, they had to go to the party welcoming Aurora's return.

Moreover, the reason Maximillian went to the party made Emily feel that her husband still had feelings for Aurora.

"Emily, you know best. Aurora became Mr. Xavier's wife because of me. Since she went into trouble for doing something she shouldn't have done, I should at least have this etiquette to repay her."

Those were Maximillian's last words when Emily asked them not to go there.

In the past, there were rumours that Emily's going to the town of Belmont to become the wife of the Xavier family had been intervened by the first son of the Altenberg family, who instigated Emily's father to do so.

Another rumour said that Aurora, who refused to marry the first son of the Altenberg family and instead made love with Maxmillian, made the first son of the Altenberg family do this devious thing.

However, Emily thought Aurora's departure was of her own free will. It was done because the Everhart family was almost threatened with bankruptcy, and the Xavier family helped their family. However, Maximillian seems convinced that Aurora left because of him.

Maximillian had made up his mind to go to the party. With him going to the party, would Maxmillian be able to leave quickly if he thought about what the people behind him would say about his own wife?

Although challenging, Emily couldn't help but go to the party as Maximillian's partner. But she did that to protect her reputation, which Maximillian couldn't keep. That way, she could also protect her child.

Sometimes, Emily thought that if Aurora hadn't gone to Belmont, it would have been Aurora who became Maximillian's wife, not her.

Arriving at the party venue, all eyes were on Mr. and Mrs. Altenberg. Several bodyguards were also behind them. Everyone welcomed them. Because the Altenberg family was the most influential in the city of Eldoria.

"Mr. and Mrs. Altenberg, thank you for coming to my homecoming party."

Aurora Everhart walked up to the two of them. Her gentle smile was the same as it had been seven years ago. Aurora showed her old friendly demeanor. However, it made Emily feel strange. She felt that the antagonist in the relationship was herself, now in the middle of Maxmillian and Aurora staring at each other.

"I can't postpone this any longer. I invited Mr. Altenberg to this party because I wanted to show you something."

Astonished looks filled the party room. Especially Emily and Maxmillian.

The open door in front of them drew their gaze to a butler carrying a young boy. What made it even more surprising was that the boy looked similar to Maxmillian?
