"I'm almost on the plane right now. I'll be available for your wedding, "I laughed into the phone as my best friend kept reminding me about her wedding to her sweetheart. It was tomorrow, and because of her, I had to take the flight back that evening. I had worked tirelessly over the weekdays and I had traveled from Mecianda to Nigeria to assist in a surgery which lasted for a few days. It was one of the craziest surgeries I've ever performed. As a neurosurgeon, seeing patients' brains is part of my daily routine, and every time I walk around people, I'm reminded of what their brains might look like.
Sounds like what a psychopath might say, but trust me, I'm far from that.
"You don't have to worry Daya, I'll be at your wedding and we are going to celebrate until we drop! " I laughed, trying so hard to sound like I wasn't tired, but I couldn't hide it for long. The urge to lie on my pillow and close my eyes for two days made me dizzy. My vision became hazy and when I tried to blink, I collided with a rock or maybe someone because I could smell the cologne. It smelled like expensive one, and when I saw the Rolex in his hand, my suspicions were confirmed.
"Are you okay?" His deep voice sent shivers through my body and I had to look up. My free hand clung onto his clothes for survival, and I couldn't let go because if I did, I'd fall. "Are you okay?" He asked yet again and wrapped his hand around my tiny waist.
I lost my voice for a few seconds and forgot that I was on a phone call with my best friend, Daya. The man in front of me was every girl's fantasy. His arms were so strong and muscular that his Italian suits felt like a second skin. His jaws were sharp, and any man would kill to have a jawline like his. Even his nose was pointed, and he had the most beautiful blue eyes. They were like the ocean blue and staring into them felt like I was going to drown. I had seen fine men in the twenty-seven years of my life, but the man whose hand circled around my waist and made me forget totally about my friend was a hell of a handsome man.
"Miss! " The man snapped his fingers in my face. "Are you okay?"
My eyes widened when the realization dawned on me. I had a fantasy about the man and totally forgot that I had collided with him. "Oh my!" I muttered and let go of his suit. I tucked my hair behind my ear and bowed in apology. "I'm sorry, sir," I said to him, and didn't dare look him in the eyes again. "Great job, Rania, you've made a complete fool out of yourself," I muttered under my breath.
"With that being said," "The man removed his strong hands from my waist. "I should be on my way," he said, clearing his throat and walking away, his luggage trailing behind him. I watched them as they went and heaved a sigh.
He is handsome!
My phone beeped and a message from Daya was displayed on my screen, but I ignored it when I saw the time.
Shits! I had five minutes.
I ran like a mad woman, dragging my luggage behind, apologizing to everyone that I saw, hit, or even pushed. I had almost missed my flight because I was staring at a beautiful man.
"This is the final boarding call for passengers Rania Brown and Eros Hamilton, booked on flight 312A to Mecianda." That's my freaking name I thought as I ran. "Please proceed to gate 3 immediately. The final checks are being completed and the captain will order the doors of the aircraft to be closed in approximately five minutes' time. I repeat, this is the final board... "
I made it in just in time before they could call my name again. I greeted the attendant and handed over my passport to her.
"Welcome onboard," she said, and I smiled back as I walked into gate 3, where I heard a throat clearing behind me and turned. It was the blue-eyed man I collided with. I looked behind him, and when I didn't see anyone else, I realized that he must have been Eros. I almost delayed our flight because of my foolishness.
"Hey! " I greeted him, but he didn't respond and just stared at me. "I'm sorry for earlier." I reached out my hand, hoping he'd understand what I meant, but he just stared at me." I'm a doctor, so I was feeling dizzy a while ago and... "
"Can you move?" His voice didn't sound angry, but rather tired, like mine. I paved the way for him as he walked past me. "I think you should start moving," he said as he walked past me, but he stopped and turned to face me. "You look tired, doctor," he said as he walked away, ruffling his blonde hair.
"At least he cared, "I muttered as I dragged my luggage to the plane. When I got seated, I yawned and rested my head on the seat. I tried to sleep, but my phone beeped yet again, and I saw another message from my friend.
Daya: Is everything alright? I've been texting you for awhile now, but you haven't replied.
Feeling too tired to reply to her text, I called her instead. "Hey Daya," I said weakly, rubbing my eyes. "My flight will take off soon," I informed her.
"Great babe! I can't wait to see you, " She sequealed and I pulled the phone away from my ear. Daya's voice sounded as if there were speakers in it. "I'm getting married, baby!"
"I can't wait to see you again and your husband, whom I have never met. What's his name again? " I asked.
Just as she was about to answer, a woman with a child in her hand brushed my shoulder as she sat down, and my phone fell off. "I'm sorry," she apologized, but I ignored her and picked up my phone from the floor, biting my lip as I stared at the scream. The screen had broken and I couldn't see anything. "I am so sorry!" She apologized yet again. "It's just that my child keeps crying and I didn't realize that you were here," the woman kept apologizing.
"It's okay," I told her, and I placed my phone inside my pockets. I told her, "I can always repair my phone," and turned to face her child. The baby was the prettiest girl I've ever seen in my entire life. She had the most beautiful hazel eyes, and the way she cooed made me smile and forget that I had had a stressful week.
"May I hold her?" I made a request to the lady.
She nodded in response and handed over her daughter to me. "Thank you for not holding your phone against me. If you want, I can help you repair it once we've landed, "she offered, but I shook my head in response.
"I totally understand." I didn't take my eyes off the little girl. She played with her black hair and raised her hand to touch my nose. "What's her name and how old is she?" I asked.
"She is 9 months old and her name is Ria," the woman answered.
"Almost the same as my name. I'm Rania. " I introduced my name and made the baby stand on my thighs. She clapped her hands while I and her mother laughed at her cuteness. "She is a lovely child," I said as I handed her back to her mother.
"Thank you," The woman smiled and patted the baby's back while I rested my head backwards. Just then, the pilot made the announcement.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome onboard flight 312A with service from Nigeria to Mecianda. We are currently second in line for takeoff and are expected to be on air in approximately five minutes. We ask that you fasten your seatbelt. Please turn off all your personal devices, including cellphones and laptops. Thank you for choosing ACE Airlines. Enjoy your flight."
I shifted in my seat as the flight was about to take off. I looked to my side and saw that Ria was fast asleep while her mother held her tight in her arms. I guess I needed my own sleep too. Just like the pilot predicted, the plane took off six minutes after the takeoff announcement.
"Good afternoon, passengers. This is your captain speaking. First, I'd like to welcome everyone to ACE Fight 312A. We are currently cruising at an altitude of 33,000 feet at an airspeed of 400 miles per hour. The time is 12:40pm. The weather looks good, and with the tailwind on our side, we expect to land in Mecianda approximately fifteen minutes ahead of schedule, " I yawned and closed my eyes, blocking out the rest of the announcement.
I needed to sleep for a long time.
An hour into the flight, I woke up to someone gripping my shoulder pretty tight. It was Ria's mother, and when I turned to face her, she was crying. The tears streamed down her face, and I had no idea why. "Why are you crying?"
"I don't feel okay. My stomach hurts. I need to use the loo. "She tried to hand over her daughter to me, but the plane shakes terribly, and if she hadn't held her daughter pretty tight, she would have fallen from her hand," I said.
"What's going on?"
Just then, the intercom came on, "Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing some turbulence, so please fasten your seat belt right away. Thank you, " The captain said over the intercom.
After I put my seatbelts on, I looked out of my window to find the wind bouncing around hard in the wind. I realized one of the engines was in trouble as smoke was rushing out of it. "Oh my God!" I inhaled and exhaled and looked to my left side as Ria's mother continued crying. I grabbed her hand and rubbed it gently. "We are going to be fine," I assured her.
"I....." She couldn't say anything as more tears escaped from her eyes. The intercom turned on again.
"This is your captain speaking. We'll have to make an emergency landing right away! " He announced, and my heart skipped a bit. I knew we were going down. Tears rolled down my face as it felt like my stomach was rising to my head. I never thought I'd be in this situation of imagining my own death. I've performed surgeries on plane crash victims, but never thought that it would happen to me. The plane began to shake, and I could hear people crying behind me. Ria's mother held her daughter pretty tight in her hands and lowered her head.
"Josh, you won't see your daughter ever again," she cried as she continued calling Josh's name.
The noise got louder and sounded like an earthquake. The oxygen masks fell from the roof. I grabbed my mask and put it over my head as the pressure increased. Ria's mother struggled with the oxygen masks, but I helped her put them over her head and her daughter's. "We'll be fine," I reassured her. She shook terribly and screamed out loud. Her daughter slipped from her hand, and before she could fall, I carried her and held her in my arms. "Save us, Lord," I prayed.
The air hostesses ran around trying to help people with the oxygen and tried so hard to calm them down. The plane dropped for a second, and I felt sick. "Josh!" Ria's mother screamed out loud. "We will soon be reunited!"
I had never been so scared in all my life, thinking I was going to die.
It all happened so quickly. The hard impact threw me forward into the seat in front of me. I held onto Ria, making sure I didn't drop her. The front of the plane was being stripped away from the body as we bounced across the rocky earth. Finally, the plane came to a stop and there was almost complete silence. The crying, screaming, and rumbling of the plane had come to an end.
