The lies you tell yourself are the most devastating lies of all… Amelia was born to what seemed like a happy middle class family but when she starts to sort through the lies she has always told herself her world starts crashing down around her.

Chapter 1 The beginning of the end

I watched from the large picturesque window as the rain tapped softly on it, I cannot even fathom how I got here or how everything just fell apart the way it did. I am startled out of my thoughts by the calling of my name.

“Amelia” I hear my mother call over and over until her voice is at shrill scream “Amelia Reynolds can you hear me”

That’s me Amelia Reynolds, I am freshly 21 and the youngest child and only daughter of Charles and Rose Reynolds, both lawyers, who feel I’m wasting my life studying apparel merchandising at the local university, they’d refused to allow me to go out of state or live on campus so I commuted to campus. I have or should I say had two older brothers, Andrew is just three years older than me and is of course a second year law student. Austin was twenty-five when he the passed and a third year law student at Yale law, he was brilliant, funny and caring, the absolute apple of my parents eye and he was definitely the favorite child. He passed nearly five years ago but the loss was still felt deeply in my family. My mother became a helicopter parent to Andrew and I and my father became a ghost we barely saw anymore, the loss of Andrew was the beginning of the end of my perfect life, perfect family and it’s where the truth begins.

“Amelia! I have been calling you!” My mother exclaimed.

“Sorry” I replied in a monotone “ I must not have heard you.”

“You need to get ready” she stated hastily “we are going to be late!”

Tonight was the night of the Halloween ball at my parents law firm and of course I was expected to attend.

“Okay, mother” I replied. I slowly made my way to giant staircase and began to climb the stairs heading to my room to get ready.
