Chapter 1 Wayle

I was a ton frustrated. This did not make any sense. Gray’s voice snapped me back into reality.

“Please leave. I won’t ask nicely after this.” He said, for the third time. I moved to beg, but it felt as though I suddenly became stiff. This wasn’t fair at all.

I dropped the tray in my hands on the countertop and took off my name tag and waiter’s collar rather violently. Taking one last glance at my boss’ outstretched hands, I dropped everything that identified me as a worker in Spoons’nd Salsas in them.

Troy gave me a weak smile from the table he was currently serving as I made my way out. It was humiliating.

“Breathe Wae, breathe. Everything is gonna be okay”. It’s not. I moved a bit away from the restaurant and sat on the side bench, trying my possible best to fight the tears that were stinging at my eyes.

I picked up my phone and dialed Valerie’s. In times like these, I needed my best friend the most. It went straight to voicemail. Of course, she’s at work.

Some people had jobs, unlike me. As if on cue, it began to pour, and no, I had no umbrella.

Still in my pathetic situation, I sluggishly stood to my feet, in search for a shade. It wasn’t yet dark. At least, there was a bright side in all this.

It was not long before Valerie called back. I could not even say much because the angry and sad tears kept pouring from my eyes. She literally drove from work to meet me.

I spotted her headlights from a distance and cracked a smile for the first time since today began.

Valerie. We had become best friends since fourth grade. She had always been with me. From when my parents got a divorce, to when my father passed away, to when my mom took to drugs, right up until when she left me.

And during the good days, when I had no family to celebrate with, Valerie, her brother, Brookes, and her parents had taken it upon themselves to be my family. They had been there for my high school graduation down to my college grad.

When I made up my mind after college to move into my own apartment, they were all there to ‘launch’ it with me. And even if it was much to my disagreement, they gladly paid my rent for a whole year.

As much as I did not want to put this on them too, this was really too much for me to handle on my own.

“Get in sweetheart.” Valerie said, breaking my train of thoughts. I settled in and winced as I felt my wet body came in contact with her car seat.

“Sorry.” I apologized. She shook her head and started driving.

“What happened?” She asked softly, making me cry all over again.

“I got fired.” I simply said. The car jerked unexpectedly and came to a halt in the middle of the road. Valerie was fond of this. I really would not be surprised if she got pulled over by the cops one day.

“Why?” She barked. “It’s their loss honestly. To loose someone as devout as you.” I smiled again. She knew just how to work her way through me.

“It’s stupid, really. One of the wasted business tycoons got at me again and I defended myself. Maybe a bit too much defence. But I was really mad and…” I paused for a breath. "…And Grey does not exactly care about why I did what I did. He’s just after how much ratings he gets and so far, I’m not contributing positively to that.” I let out a sigh of relief for sharing how I felt.

She looked away from me and resumed driving as the impatient honks were increasing.

“Whoever that douche was deserved every bit of what you gave him, okay.” I nodded, wiping my tears. “Secondly, Grey is, was really unfair to you and that makes him very unworthy of your tears. Wipe them off.” I did as she said, instinctively, as a child given a clear cut command from its parent.

“So… what now?”

“ I would have to begin job hunting all over again.” I sighed at the thought of it.

“You could do something professional this time you know?” She glanced at me. I knew that was coming. But it wasn’t really a bad idea. I needed all the money I could get.

“You think they’ll take someone like me? Without any experience?” I asked, feeling a bit skeptical about the idea.

“You’ve gone to school. And you graduated top of your class, girl. That’s enough experience, honey. There is a vacant spot for a graphic designer at the company that’s merging with the company dad works in. You could go on Monday. Just get all your things ready and you’ll be very much okay.” She concluded, giving me a genuine smile. I gladly returned it.

“To be entirely honest, I just can’t imagine myself jobless.” I lied, still smiling.

To be entirely honest, my rent was very due. But I didn’t say that aloud. Obviously.

“Where do I drop you off? My house or yours?” She asked, eyes still focused on the road. I shook my head. I definitely did not want to worry her parents or anyone else with this. Yes,Valerie still lives with her parents.

“Mine.” I simply said. I was glad she did not try arguing. She nodded, and I murmured a ‘thank you.’

She pulled over in front of my house and I took out my bag while stepping out.

"I'll send you the link to the forms so you can fill in the details, okay?” I nodded.

“Thank you very much Val, this means a lot to me. I love you.”I said, sincerely.

"I love you too Wae." I stood there, glued to the spot as I watched her drive away. I sighed and made my way inside my apartment. I freshened up and felt a loss of appetite so I did not bother eating dinner. I plumped on my bed and turned on my MacBook, the same one Valerie’s parents gifted me last Christmas, ready to fill the forms.

Kingston Corporation. I sighed.

“This should be fun.”
