Chapter 1 Counter

chapter 1

How did I end up in a bed with a stranger?

Think Lamari, think!

Tracing back the things I've done last night, everything was just as fuzzy. All I know is that, one moment I was just in the counter talking to a bartender, then the next thing I knew I was in a hotel with a guy who I can't even recognize because he was so drunk.

"Hey Girl!"

I jumped in shock when a woman suddenly appeared like a mushroom in front of me. She is so small that you would mistake her for a lost grade schooler in the college department if she wasn't wearing an ID.

Who is this abominable creature grinning like an idiot in front of me?

"Um, earth to you Lamari?"

She waved her hand in front of me pulling me back into the cruel reality.

Ah, shit. I almost forgot, he's my best friend.

"What?" I snapped at her and continued walking.

I'm a little annoyed with him because he's one of the reasons why I'm here today, having trouble opening which poncho I put on last night. Well, a part of me has its fault too, but if he hadn't forced me, I would have been worried about the meeting right now.

"You Mars, you were wild with unfairness last night," he giggled as he walked. "Many suckers came to you, which one of them took you home?"

I was too drunk, too wasted. When I woke up at six this morning, I left immediately without waking him up. I panicked suddenly, I feel like I pulled a call boy last night because I was so gaga.

D-mn, my head hurts even more thinking about it.

I still have a hangover but we can't postpone the meeting because the university's anniversary is next month. Aside from that, we're going to showcase different kinds of talents for some of the sponsors to consider.

"You're going to ignore me Camilla because I'm going to be even wilder if you don't get out of there by my side," I responded with restraint to this which didn't seem to work because he just laughed at me. "Go to your class if you have class and don't ruin my day."

"Why so grumpy sissy? Didn't you enjoy it?"

What's to enjoy, I can't even remember his face? Or the feeling at least.

"The only thing I'll enjoy right now is a peace of mind. Now, fuck off because I still have a meeting to go to."

"I am the secretary just in case you forgot."

Ugh.

Lord, I just committed a sin last night, don't let me be tempted to do something new. Amen.

-

Does he look like an effin gigolo?

He was about to forget what happened, because a one night stand isn't new for him. He even prefers that he leave suddenly, others would cling to him which would annoy him the most. Yet this woman, the audacity! Adding to the insult was the cousin's teasing when he found him in the room who understood what had happened with just a single glance.

He, Gavino Orleon, is feared and respected in the mafia world. He who has wiped out an entire organization. He who has taken countless lives of whoever stood his way. He, a ruthless, unforgiving near to being the devil himself.

He's a fucking mafia boss for fuck's sake.

And he was treated like a cheap gigolo.

Who does that?

"Tangina bro, I begged you to pick it up yesterday. I mean, 2011 pesos really? There's even eleven pesos butal, are you that cheap?"

The man in front burst out laughing, making his head even hotter. A simple anger doesn't justify what he's feeling right now, it's beyond rage!

"Leave from my presence if you don't want to die," he responded angrily to his cousin.

He acted like he was hurt, "Why are you angry? Why do you think it's my fault?"

He closed his eyes tightly at the same time as he shook his head when he got a headache caused by a hangover.

"Boss we found him!"

The cheerful face of one of his assigned staff greeted him upon entering the office. He was holding a brown envelope that contained photos of the woman he was with last night and other related documents.

"Finally," there was a trace of irritation in the tone of his speech.

"That was fast," he grinned. "So, who's the unlucky girl?"

He ignored his cousin and just quietly read the paper he was holding. It took him almost five minutes, turning over the papers, reading only the important details.

"Let's go, we have a meeting to catch."

"We have?"

The staff and his cousin looked at each other when suddenly his demonic smile appeared. He rarely smiles, and now it looks like he has a bad plan. Before they could scream, he stood up and headed for the door. He's the boss, they just follow without hesitation.

'Lamari Lockhart huh,' he thought.

Turns out, the girl is a college student at a university sponsored by their company. He is also the student union president who according to gathered information, will have a meeting today.

"What time is it?"

Enzo, our vice-chairman, raised his brow at me. He didn't answer, instead he shook his head and immediately returned his attention to typing on his laptop. Well, does it piss me off now?

"Teh, calm down, it was only ten minutes ago." said Camilla while she was busy arranging some documents.

Because our advisor has been around for a long time. We can proceed with the meeting but this time, we need his signatures and approval for our projects. We need to polish the plans so we don't have any problems in the future.

"Are you really like that--"

I glared at her when our eyes met, she covered her mouth and mouthed the word 'sorry.'

The others looked at us with their questionable eyes staring right at us, I just ignored them.

I am the president of the union, a role model for my fellow students. One wrong move, my reputation that I have been keeping for a long time will be ruined and my scholarship might suffer. It's my last year in college and I'm about to graduate from the architecture course. I can't afford to lose this opportunity.

That's why I shouldn't go with him yesterday because some people might see us. But she's so persistent, we even moved to another city, traveled an hour just to be with me.

I admit it was fun at first, of course we needed some time off to relax. Relaxing with Camilla is equivalent to getting wasted. It's more of a stress aftermath.

"Lanny, how's the budget plan for the event? The stores outside the campus that plan to set up a stall here, have you read their proposals regarding how will we profit too?"

"Uh, shall we start the meeting?" I didn't speak, my eyes were straight ahead. After a few seconds passed, he said, "Anyway, yes I've already read all of their proposals and I've segregated which ones will benefit us the most."

"Osya," I still have a hangover I want to say but of course I can't. "Enzo, take over the meeting. You've been briefed before, we've talked about it several times. You'll just have to present it again through the PowerPoint I've made to our advisor before he presents it to our Dean."

I arranged my things and stood up.

"Wait you're leaving?" Enzo asked.

I opened my mouth to speak, to my dismay the advisor I had been waiting for was already there at the door.

"Guys, I'm sorry if I'm late, one of the school's investors has arrived. And by that, he'll be joining us for a little while, so get ready."

Talk about bad timing.

"Looks like you're not," Enzo teased and stood up to fix the projector.

Boy I wanted to strangle the motherf-cker right now if only Mr. Herrera. And why did it come? Ts

"Sir, can I leave the meeting to Enzo? I feel bad."

The gay man yelled at me, "You're hungover."

My eyes widened when he said this. I looked at Camilla but even she didn't seem to know how she said it.

Do I smell of alcohol? Maybe not. I soaked in cr for an hour to make sure that the smell of alcohol and cigarettes disappeared from my body. I almost took a bath and even finished my perfume earlier.

"Ms. Lockhart I was also a student, I can differentiate a hangover from those who are truly sick. Now, move."

Sh-t oh. Am I that obvious?

I looked at my colleagues who simply laughed.

'What's funny?' I widened my eyes as I glared at them. They pursed their lips, trying to hold back their laughter.

"Now I know," says Enzo as if he came up with a conclusion.

I ignored them and went to my designated seat.

"Let's wait for them, they're having a conversation with the Dean. Prepare your presentations and he will also join the forum."

And so we obliged.

Wait, where is my phone?

I took my bag and scratched it. I immediately saw it and when I opened it I had 30 missed calls.

"Lockhart your phone," scolded Mr. Herrera.

"Excuse me for a while sir because there might be an emergency."

"Hurry up while they're not here, the rest of you, silence your phones or better yet turn them off first."

Why did the other cousin call from us?

When I was about to text it, his name appeared again. I pressed the answer button and went to the corner of the office.

"We have a meeting why are you calling? There is an emergency--"

[Jusmiyo, you are a wonderful child, may God forgive you!]

I immediately put the phone away from my ear when I heard mom's voice screaming on the other line.

I suddenly felt nervous, I can't explain it. Why do they have so many missed calls and mom still answered because she just called the other day.

Because they are in the farm, mom, apart from being far from civilization where my cousin is, the signal is also weak there. So once a week, or once in every two weeks, he only goes there to be called to talk to me. Often, we talk on messenger.

"-ma? Why?"

[What why?! Who was the guy you were with last night?! Your aunt Marites showed you your photos, you're so young!]

"Huh?"

- especially what pictures.

Look at the photos you send of your man on Facebook!

I immediately hung up and quickly opened my facebook. I immediately went to my timeline and was a little relieved to see nothing stupid that I had posted.

I immediately called them cinancel and went to my messenger.

Holy fuck.

I took a selfie with the man and sent it to my cousin. Fuck, I look I didn't just send one, I sent many.

I want to kneel on the floor, cry. What nonsense I was doing last night.

"Lamari, that's right, they're here," scolded Mr. Herrera.

And just when I thought that was the only problem, it was even worse.

When I looked in front, our Dean was there with three other men.

"Shit," I couldn't help but sneer.

I felt my knees tremble as my hands began to shake in so much fear, confusion.

"I would like you all to meet, Mr. Gavino Orleon."

What the actual fuck.

He's the one in the pictures I sent.

He was with me last night.

Fuck.

What the fuck hahaha there, I'm in a good mood.
