I was lying down on my bed trying to learn the new solo single by a black pink member.
"It making solo, don don don don dondon"
I was singing out loudly when i got interpreted by a phone call.I picked up my phone to see who was calling but all i could see was an unknown number. At first i ignored it but later picked after several rings.
"Hello?" I said as i picked up my phone
"Your mom is at the hospital"The caller said
"Sorry?"I said in a confused state
"Asphren is at Carlox hospital" the caller said.
On hearing the name I knew the person was right.I paused. The word felt like they had created a dam in my throat, making it harder and harder to speak.
"Is she in a critical condition? Is she under constant medical supervision?" I asked hoping to ask more questions.
"She is not in a critical condition and she's under supervision" the caller said.
"Please,pr..."I was going to say something but the caller already hung up.
I brought my hands to my mouth.I was going to cry, i was going to lose it.I looked down.Mom needed me.Maybe in a small way but i know she does.
Dabbing away the tears, I ran out of the room to see my mom in the hospital.Tears were rolling down my cheeks as I was running. I couldn't believe my eyes. My very own mother or should i say my Non biological mother is sick.
I could vividly remember how she took me in as her own like it was yesterday. It's been seven years since I've lived as an orphan. She adopted me and took care of me for 11 years. I never felt one for once. She wasn't one of the richest moms but definitely one of the good ones.
Questions began to run through my mind. How am I going to pay for her bills? I mean I am just eighteen years old. I haven't started working.Yes! We are poor but one thing I am sure of is that mom can't die, not now, never.
Moment later, I got to the hospital. I ran to the reception.
"Hi...I'm here to see my mom, Asphren Smith, i am her daughter" i said
"Daughter?" The nurse asked
"Yes" I said , confused, maybe she had noticed the non resemblance.
"But someone already came claiming to be her daughter," the nurse said.
"Mariana?" I asked
The nurse nodded in agreement
"Yeah, she is my sister," I said.
"Oh,i see" the nurse said
"Your mom is at ward 108,it's by your left" she said
"Okay" I said.
As I was about to leave, I remembered mom's hospital bill. I then ran back to see the nurse.
"Sorry ma'am,but what about her bills?" I asked.
Before the nurse could talk,i started blabbing my mouth
"Ma'am, you would have to give me some time to fetch the money, I'm eighteen and i can't get a job but i promise i would do anything to get your money and as well save my..." I was about to finish the statement when the nurse interrupted.
"Your sister already paid for the treatment" the nurse said and smiled.
"mariana? Paid for mom's treatment? How? When? Why?" I said in total confusion
Mariana is just seventeen for Christ sake, where could she have gotten the money from? I looked at the nurse and she gave me a questionnaire look and I got the message immediately.
"Sorry ma'am thanks for the information"I said and I left.
I got to my mum's ward. She was lying down on the bed. I moved closer to her and held her hands. Mom's hand felt so soft, almost papery in a way. This feeling made me think of how water smoothed out the edges of a stone. I smiled as she smiled back at me.
"Did you ever get anything wrong?" I asked. "Say the wrong word,do the wrong things?".
I waited for an answer, receiving nothing but smiles on her face.
"Well, you and dad used to fight,so you must have been wrong sometimes," I said.
I held her hand tighter, trying to warm it in mine. I blinked back tears, worried she'd sense how scared I was.
"The doctor believes that the shock of dad's departure was the catalyst for your current condition"I said knowing that i might also be one of her problems since i contributed to her daily stress.
"Mom,I am sorry that I am not always there for you. I'm sorry that I am a foolish adopted child who doesn't know how to...''As the words were still in my mouth, mom talked.
"Dear, don't say that ever. You're not an adopted child, I gave birth to you, you are my daughter. My very own child"she managed to talk as tears rolled down her cheeks.
I felt a bit emotional. I heard her hand a little tighter and leaned in, whispering.
"Please don't make me need a back up parent, though, okay? I still need you, Susan needs you and dad...he looks like he would still find us cause things might fall apart for him if he tries to forget us. So when it's time to wake up, you gotta come back, alright?"I said
I waited for her mouth to twitch or her finger to move, anything to show that she could hear me but nothing happened.
I stood up,wiped my checks, hoping no one would notice me as I left the ward.
