As Fiona exited her car, she picked up her bag and looked at the engagement ring on her finger, which instantly dropped her spirits. She cursed the day she forcefully engaged to Derek Lawson-she had to get married to him against her own will in two months for her father's sake.
With a worn-out sigh, Fiona reached for her extra house key and opened the door. The moment she touched the knob, it opened, letting her enter the living room.
"I am home, Dad!" She cried out, exhausted, tossing her purse onto the couch. She is been searching for a job all day to help pay off her father's debt, but she has not been successful in finding one yet.
She pulled out her phone, clutching her purse, and was shocked to see six missed calls from an unidentified number. She dialed the number and waited for it to be answered.
"Who is on the line?" She mumbled, clearing her throat of whatever lump she thought she had felt.
"Fiona Peterson, is that you?" The unknown person inquired.
"Yes, I am. Who are you?" Fiona inquired, her heart pounding quickly and hoping all was well. How was her name known to someone she doesn't know?
"It does not matter right now; I am calling from the city hospital. Your dad was found unconscious and is here right now. I took his phone to see who he knew, and that is how I found your number."
She immediately ended the call. She has no one else but her father, and he cannot leave her to handle this on her own. .
She grabbed her purse and her car keys and hurried from the house to the car.
"He can't leave me," her inner voice mumbled.
"He can't leave me with him; if he dies, how will I get myself out of this mess he has put me in."
Fiona was lost in her own thoughts and did not care if she ignored every stop sign she came across until she arrived at the city hospital. Her hands were shaking, and her heart was racing.
She made her way quickly to the hospital attendants' reception area.
"Morgan Peterson please, I want to know his ward number." Trying to keep her feelings in check, she demanded.
"Ward 11, please."
She dashed to the ward's location right away, not caring if people thought she was crazy. Through the large glass window, she saw her father lying in a hospital bed. She hurried to the door and saw a nurse and a doctor tending to him.
"How is he? Please, how is my father?!" She shouted while clutching her dad's hand.
"His condition is critical, we've been trying to regain his consciousness, but he isn't responding to any of the treatments"
"What is wrong with him? Tell me!" She yelled, ignoring the nurse's gesture to calm her down.
"He was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer, his survival rate is very fragile, what he needs now is surgery to remove the tumors where he had already spread."
She felt my head blow up the moment she heard that. He never disclosed to her that he had cancer, so she was unaware of it. Although she had nowhere to obtain money and he had none for the procedure, she was aware that surgeries were costly.
"Please can you do the surgery? I'll get the money. How much would it cost?." Fiona muttered as she felt her chest constrict and the room start to spin around her. Where and how would she get the money? She was empty, without savings, without a job.
"I apologize, miss. According to hospital policy, payment is required before any work is done. The estimated cost of this specific procedure is $300,000. We would take care of him to make sure he is still alive, but we do not perform any surgery unless the cost is covered. If you would excuse me." Afterwards, the nurse and the doctor left.
Fiona was lost in her own thoughts and felt as though my entire world had collapsed. She was holding her father's hand tightly and listening to the heart monitor beep.
With so much money needed for his surgery, who was going to assist her? She has no one who can help her except Jennie, her best friend, but she cannot help with such a large sum of money. Where can she work a job that pays that much a month? That's impossible.
"Derek?"
That was the first thought that entered her mind. Derek, her soon-to-be husband, but approaching him would mean admitting defeat.
Despite the fact that she had previously challenged him, she and her father were responsible for repaying the loan. She had to show him that she was not going to back down. But what would she do?
While driving herself straight to the closest bar to drown her sorrows in booze, Fiona continued to be lost in contemplation. She was starting to feel overwhelmed by this.
'Why do I deserve not to be happy? My happiness was reduced when I lost my mother after becoming engaged to Derek against my will, and now my father is in this situation.' She contemplated.
"Hey, watch it!" A lady yelled, bringing Fiona back to reality, and she realized she was about to hit her.
"I'm sorry." Fiona apologized, not caring that the woman was cursing at her nonstop. She slipped out of the car, entered the bar, where the bartender was, and ordered three bottles of whiskey.
She took a shot while reflecting on past events in her life. Her father's selfish ambition had gotten them into this situation, and now she was on the receiving end.
Fiona frowned at the taste, which appeared to be eating away at her taste buds, but something drew her to take more, and she ended up emptying two bottles.
She was suddenly surrounded by a manly aura and could smell the masculine scent of sandalwood in her nostrils. She was never sure if this was real or just a drunken delusion.
She had a sudden, intense desire, but she was not sure if it was the alcohol's effects or if the stranger was inadvertently luring her in.
"Your drink cost $100." Observing her at rest, the bartender said.
Surprised, Fiona took out her wallet and opened it to find it empty as soon as she heard that.
"Fuck!" Too drunk to even think clearly, she scowled to herself and hid her wallet from the bartender who gave her a derisive glance.
"What? You don't have the money? If you don't pay I'll call the cops on you."
Fiona turned to look at the other side. Even in her drunken state, she felt the stranger's eyes on her. She felt embarrassed because, on the outside, she appeared wealthy, but how would she present herself with the money?
She lost her mind and began blabbering, "I don't think I have a dime on me, I wish I had a fucking job."
"There is only one way for you to earn enough to pay for this drink." The bartender added successfully, capturing her attention, and Fiona, despite her inebriation, was willing to do anything to get out of debt.
Her desire for money knew no bounds.
"Please tell me what it is. I am willing to do anything; I am so fucking tired of this shit." She babbled, tossing the tiny tumbler in her hand.
Fiona noticed the bartender whispering something to the man dressed in a black suit. He was holding a bottle of Heineken, and Fiona was trying to get a better look at him when she inhaled his cologne, which made her more wet.
"Derek? Fuck!" She muttered once more, clenching her thighs together as she awaited the bartender's response.
"Okay, miss, to save your ass from this upcoming embarrassment, I have a job for you, and you will earn your profit this instant when it is completed."
The bartender kept talking until his words sounded strange to her ears; she could not hear properly, her head spun, and she became more horny.
"Derek?" She whispered, drawing nearer to the man beside her, who was perplexed by her situation.
"Derek, what are you doing here? To trick me into marrying you? I told you I am not getting married." Fiona whispered, and she almost fell, but he caught her carefully and tenderly.
"Please help me out; I am fucking hot." Fiona mumbled, biting her lips seductively, and then found herself in the arms of a man she pretended to be Derek, who was taking her wherever he knew, and she passed out.
Fiona regained consciousness shortly after, initially experiencing a headache. She woke up in a room on the bed, naked except for the white duvet covering her.
"What happened to me?" She asked herself, looking for her clothes while trying to recall what had happened before she passed out: the drinks, the stranger, and how she had begged him to have sex with her.
Putting her hand to her mouth, she realized she was the only person in the room at the same bar. Her clothes were on the floor, but what she discovered surprised her even more.
