Anna's POV
It was night and the atmosphere seemed to be dull. I had just finished another day's numerous chores. My legs and hands ache a lot and I feel weak every passing minute. The birds of the air chirped and sang melodiously, flying high above with no worries. I smiled sadly at them, wishing I was one at the moment. I feel jealous of the birds knowing they do not have worries that could hinder their freedom and happiness. My uncle had just retired to bed and I feel so grateful for that at the moment. The stars in the sky shined so bright and I wonder if they also have worries of their own. The breeze blew gently and for a moment, I felt the coldness as my wound hurt again. I wished I was never a weak omega, I mean, I could have healed myself with my powers and not wait for the wound to heal itself with time. Staring at the wound on my feet, I knew it was not going to heal up anytime soon. Sighing tiredly, I stood up calling it a night. My uncle, a feared man, lay comfortably on the bed as I walked down to my room. The door creaked open and I found my way to the bed which looked old enough to be my grandmother's age-mate. Laying down, I felt the pain resurfacing coupled with the fact that the bed is so bad that it causes backache and body pain. It needed to be changed but who could I have told about it? My uncle? Oh please, he does not even have the consciousness that I existed, talk more of caring for and about me. Thank goodness he even allowed me in, providing shelter for me. Having no choice, I picked up the ragged blanket to finally sleep on the floor. I shrieked in pain as my leg hit the weak bedstand. The coldness of the bare floor hit me as I laid down and for a moment, I wished I had a power of any sort that could take away these pains. With tears cascading down my cheeks like a flowing river, I slowly drifted off to sleep.
Splash...I opened my eyes swiftly as the cold water hit the pores of my skin. I moved my eyes sideways and realized it was morning already. Wait, so fast?
"Are you done looking around? Do you have a death wish?". I looked up to behold the scornful look on my uncle's face.
"When you are done daydreaming, get something to do with your useless life. Having to wake you up this morning, I hope my day does not go bad". He said angrily as he closed the door rashly. Oh Lord, have mercy on the weak door.
His words reminded me that it was another day to continue with the harsh reality of life.
Taking the basket, I walked hurriedly to the market to get things my uncle had written down for me to get. Standing amongst others in the queue, the man standing in front of me turned, looking back at me. Instantly, I could hear everyone's hushed tones and I gently bowed down staring at nothing in particular, waiting for my turn.
"I do not have the fruit you asked for", the fruit seller said. Thinking she was mistaken, I repeated what I wanted again and she looked at me with disdain.
"Are your ears now blocked? You want me to sell for you this early morning and lose customers. Look behind you, four customers left already. Please, get lost", she shouted angrily and I immediately got out of the queue. The rest of the customers looked at me mockingly and yes I refused to let the tears drop down, I was used to it anyway.
One, two, three, four, five and six. This would be the seventh shop I would be getting to without being attended to. How do I go back to telling my uncle I was unable to get what he sent me to buy? This eighth shop is my only hope right now.
"Anna, it's you. I'm so sorry but I cannot sell anything to you at the moment. the seller said.
"Is there a reason for that?" I asked weakly.
"Perhaps, you know the reason, Anna. I'm so sorry once again but you have to leave now. My customers are about to go elsewhere", she pleaded with me.
Turning around, I could hear the same regular hushed tones. They were having a topic of discussion about me. My legs ache after walking for a very long time. I looked at the empty basket I was carrying and sighed tiredly.
"Are you cursed or something?" I looked ahead to see a young girl staring angrily at me. We were probably age-mates but she looked so elegant and... Down to earth Anna, what are you thinking of? Goodness, lots of fruits and pebbles scattered messily on the floor. I did not do that, did I?
You are just the way you have been described to be. Look at what you have done. Are your eyes blind? Pay me back for this mess right now!" She shouted as she roughly pushed me aside, forcefully grabbing my hair.
"I...I am sorry but I do not have a dime with me". I cried, pleading with her.
"You don't have a dime yet you are blind to watch where you are going", she replied, giving me a sound slap that I was sure could reset a factory's system.
The sting of the slap made me cringe in silent pain.
"I forgive you this time. By the way, you stink and your hair is whack. Move!" She said, shoving me aside as she picked up everything.
I should not have collided with her. With my scattered hair, open wound, and tired face, I knew I looked like a rag. I picked up the basket and headed b home, I was so certain a punishment awaited me.
