Chapter 1

PACT WITH THE DEVIL

Sofia's POV.

The streets of New Harbour were shrouded in darkness, with shadows stretching ominously as I hurried towards GabriŠµl Salvatore's villa. Each stŠµp echoed my growing anxiety and depression. I knew what was waiting inside-the formidable mafia lord, whose power threw a terrible shadow over the city. Entering the mansion seemed like stepping into an other planet. The opulence struck me as a stark contrast to my simple attire. I squared my shoulders, heart thumping as I approached the study where GabriŠµl waited. I'd rehearsed my plea a thousand times, my father's fate hanging in the balance.

Gabriel sat in a leather chair, the room illuminated by a faint, flickering glow from a single lamp. As I entered, his commanding gaze met mine, and his presence dominated the space. "I've been expecting you, Miss ValŠµnti," his voice was flawless, betraying none of the darkness that whispered out of his control over New Harbour. I swallowed my fear and summoned courage. "My father, Mr. Salvatore, owes a debt to your organisation. "I'm here to negotiate." GabriŠµl leaned back and studied me with a faint smirk. "The debts owed by your father are enormous. What makes you believe I should keep your promise?

Despair fuelled my resolve. "He has made mistakes, but he is my father. I'll do whatever is necessary to ensure his safety." GabriŠµl's amusement deepened, and a dangerous glimmer appeared in his eyes. "Whatever it takes," you say. Admirable, but inexperienced." Anger lurked beneath my serene exterior. "Mr. Salvatore, I am not here for games. "I'm here to strike a deal." Tension crackled in the air as GabriŠµl considered my comments. He leaned forward with his gaze unwavering. "I have a suggestion for you, Miss Valenti. "A pact." My heart skipped a beat. "What kind of pact?"

A slow, calculated smile spread across GabriŠµl's face. "Be my 'pŠµt' for a year, and I'll forgive your father's debt. "You'll be under my protection, and he'll be free." I recoiled, astonishment and fear merging within of me. The chamber closed in on me, choking me with its opulence and threat. I struggled to keep my composure as I considered the weight of his offer. As I struggled with my decision, time dragged on. The silence between us felt heavy, like the weight of my choice. Finally, my voice trembled slightly as I said. "YŠµs." GabriŠµl's smile widened, prŠµdatory. "ConsidŠµr it donŠµ, Miss ValŠµnti."

As I turned to leave, my thoughts raced over the consequences of my decision. Outside, the city appeared eerily quiet, and the night was unusually dark. GabriŠµl's mansion loomed behind me like a spectre, a disturbing reminder of the agreement I had just sealed. As I walked away from GabriŠµl Salvatore's estate, a small rustling broke the silence-a whisper of wind, a rustle of leaves. Each step felt heavier than the previous one, burdened by the weight of my decision. Being GabriŠµl's 'pŠµt' for a year was a dangerous gamble to save my father's life.

The night enveloped me in its eerie silence, and the city around me was a maze of shadows and secrets. GabriŠµl's mansion loomed behind me, its grandeur serving as a disturbing reminder of the darkness I had wilfully entered. I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd just sealed my fate, exchanging one type of confinement for another. As I turned a corner, a figure emerged from the shadows-a man dressed in a tailored suit, his features obscured by the low streetlights. I tensed instinctively, my heart beating with anticipation. Was it one of GabriŠµl's men who asked for my cooperation? Or is there someone else, lurking in the darkness with unknown intentions?

"Miss Valenti," a voice said, silky and unexpectedly familiar. The figure drew closer, revealing himself to be Marcus De Luca, a long-time acquaintance from my father's business circle. Relief washed over me, tempered with caution. "Marcus," I greeted warily, keeping aware of my surroundings. He took measured steps, and his experience was a mix of concern and fascination. "I heard about your meeting with Gabriel Salvatore. Are you alright?" I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I made an arrangement with him. "To save my father." Marcus frowned, his concern deepening. "You understand what dealing with Gabriel entails, Sofia. It's not only about debts and favours."

I nodded, my throat tightened with unspoken fears. "I had no choice. "My father..." "I understand," Marcus stated gently, his gaze searching mine. "But be careful. GabriŠµl's influence runs deep, and once you're in his world, it's difficult to leave." His words rang like caution bells in my head. I was aware of the hazards, but the alternative, losing my father, seemed unthinkable. I couldn't afford to exhibit weakness now, especially when every move was being scrutinised. "I'll be fine," I assured Marcus, concealing my uncertainty with forced confidence. He studied me for a little more, then sighed in resignation. Just remember, Sofia. "Not everything is as it seems with GabriŠµl Salvatore."

With that enigmatic instruction, Marcus waved me farewell and vanished into the darkness. Left alone once again, I resumed my journey home, the weight of my decision settling like a leaden shroud around my shoulders. As I approached my flat, a sense of dread persisted. The night had shed light on my desperate condition, but it had also left me with unanswered questions and a gnawing sense of unease. What had I really agreed to when I accepted GabriŠµl's offer? And how far was I willing to go to protect my father? Behind closed doors, the darkness whispered its secrets, promising equal parts danger and salvation. I had made a contract with the devil, and there was no turning back.
