The football field had been decorated, it had a huge stage, and on the stage was a glass podium. On the sides of the podium were five chairs each. Each chair was occupied by someone holding a high position at Ivy university. Ten feet after the stage were black chairs spread in three rows with ten columns.
Students in their black convocation gowns sat still, waiting to be called to collect their certificates.
"Zelda Henderson, the valedictorian of business class," the MC called out.
Zelda's brown skin shone with pride as she walked on stage to collect her certificate. She smiled and revealed the tiny gem on her incisor. She took a picture with the dean of her department and walked off the stage.
An hour later, the graduation was over, and families were taking pictures.
"I can't believe it, I'm through with university," Zelda groaned to her mom.
"No more late-night studying and spending days in the library. My little professor has to find a life," Grace, her mom cooed.
"A two-time valedictorian and a graduate at the age of 21, I am on fire, Mom," Zelda said and laughed.
"If you hadn't taken two years of school, you would have gotten this degree at 19," Grace reminded her.
"I didn't know what I wanted to study, and I do not regret it," she told her mom.
"Zelda! There she is," Sarah yelled and ran over to meet her.
"Congratulations, love!" Zac said.
"Congratulations to all of us," Zelda said, and group hugged her friends.
"A group hug without the queen bee, what a world!" Olivia exclaimed.
"Oh, shut up!" Zelda said and pulled her into a hug.
"Are you ready for the new city, new life, new men?" Olivia asked.
"Olivia! My mom is here," Zelda scolded.
" I am sure she doesn't mind," Olivia said and pulled away from the hug. The group turned to greet Zelda's mom.
"I don't mind Olivia," Grace assured them.
"See," Olivia said to Zelda.
"Whatever," Se replied with an eye roll.
"What new city?" Grace asked.
"I think I heard my mom call. Sarah, Zac, let's go help out my mom," Olivia said and pulled them away. How could she leave me to handle this all alone? She watched her friends leave to Olivia's car and finally turned to look at her mother, mustering all the courage she had.
"What is going on?" Grace asked Zelda.
"Mom, I am moving to the city with my friends," Zelda said.
"When did you decide this, and why am I finding out about it now?" Grace asked.
Zelda sighed and walked closer to her mom. "I didn't tell you earlier because I knew you would try to convince or blackmail me into staying. I am tired of Minnesota, Mom. I want to go to New York. I've always wanted to go there. You stopped me for university, but you aren't stopping me this time," she said.
"I didn't stop you from going to New York," Her mom replied.
"Yes, you did. And, because I couldn't go, my friends decided to stay, but we don't want to stay anymore. I don't want to stay here anymore," she explained.
"Zelda," Grace called her daughter's name and held her face. She wiped away the tears and stared at Zelda with bloodshot eyes.
"Mom, please not here," Zelda pleaded.
"I am so sorry for stopping you all these years. We'll discuss better when we get home. For now, go hang out with your friends," Grace said, dismissing her.
"Are you sure?" Zelda asked Grace.
"Yes, I am sure. I need to catch up with Ashley," she said and shooed Zelda away with her fingers.
"I love you, Mom," Zelda said, hugged her mom, and ran to meet her friends.
"So?" Olivia asked Zelda when she got to them.
"Well, it went better than expected," She said with a bright smile.
"She agreed?" Zac asked.
"Hmm, she didn't, but she didn't disagree either," She informed them.
"A bear as a toast for our win and our move to New York," Olivia cheered, handing Zelda a beer.
"I can't drink," Zelda refused the alcohol.
"Come on cock block, you're twenty-one now, you can get drunk, lit, and this is celebratory," Olivia tried to persuade her, but she kept shaking her head. "You're a valedictorian COCK. Quack! Quack! Quack!" Olivia teased.
"You don't want to be the valedictorian chicken," Zac supported Olivia. They made chicken sounds and imitated their body movements to persuade Zelda.
Zelda turned to look at Sarah for help. "Sorry, love, but I am drinking, so you have to. Don't be a va-le-dic-to-rian chicken," Sarah said and teamed up with Zac and Olivia.
"Olivia has brainwashed you all," Zelda said, giving up. She took the bottle from Olivia, and finally, the group stopped disgracing themselves. "Jesus, so dramatic," She added.
"Cheers to the latest graduates and new city Stormers," Sarah yelled.
"Okay, no, don't ever say that," Olivia said. They all burst into laughter and clicked their glasses.
"To our new life," Zelda whispered, and they all got into a hug.
"Your girlfriend must hate us," Olivia said to Zac.
"Yeah, we broke up, got to find some new city cats to get this cock up and awake," Zac said.
"Eww," Zelda and Sarah teased.
"Shut up, virgins," Olivia said.
They all laughed and continued drinking.
"So, see you all at the party tonight?" Olivia asked, looking at Zelda.
"I'm down," Zac said.
"Same here," Sarah replied.
"I can't come. I need to make sure my mom understands that I am going to New York even if she doesn't agree," Zelda said.
"Cock block," Olivia muttered.
"No matter what you call me, I am not backing out of this. Anyway, because I am backing out now, I owe you a party when we get to New York," Zelda said.
"Immediately we get to New York," Olivia said.
"We have to settle in and rest, maybe a week later, any bar you want," Zelda negotiated.
"I'll call my connections. We are about to get lit," Olivia cheered and chugged down her half-filled bottle of wine.
"Yes, we are," Zac cheered. Sarah looked at Zelda, and they both shook their heads.
"See ya," Zelda said and walked away from her friends.
"We're leaving this cursed state," Olivia wailed.
"So dramatic and loud," Zelda murmured as she hopped into her car...
