Chapter 1 So much for being gentle men

River's POV:

The sky looked like it would pour anytime soon, the clouds black and heavy just waiting to break open and wreck havoc.

Just like my life!

Mother was speaking but I was lost in my thoughts that I couldn't hear her. We had just exited the seamstress' store where we had come to pick up my dresses for the mating ball, an event I am bring forced to attend. We were standing in front of the store awaiting a carriage, and after snapping out of my thoughts, I eventually spoke up.

"I wish to visit the stables. It's been a long time since I rode a horse." I said. Truth was, I just needed an escape from the house for a while. Though I had agreed to participate in the Mating Ball, I couldn't stop thinking about how I was constantly being exploited by my own parents.

"River" Mother called, and I knew she was about to make a protest to my request " The mating ball is in barely 5 hours, why do you want to indulge in such demeaning activity at this time?"

"Mother, what is demeaning about riding a horse? Please let me do this, it's the only way I'll have any peace of mind."

She remained quiet for a while before shrugging her shoulders.

"Fine! But when your father asks, I didn't give you any permission for this. You went off on your own." she said.

That would be more trouble for me but I couldn't refuse. When a carriage halted, I assisted my mother in climbing, then I watched as it rode away before heading in the opposite direction.

I heaved a sigh of relief but it barely lasted as I bumped harshly into someone. Roughly, I fell to the ground bruising my elbow in the process.

I looked up, squinting my eyes due to the brightness of the sun to catch a glimpse of the person that I bumped into. And I saw a handsome young man with a fine jawline, green eyes, black hair, and a clean-shaven face.

"Stop gawking. I know what I look like." The young man said in a deep voice.

I snapped out of her day dream, quickly stood up, and dusted myself off. " Pfft!" I scoffed at his arrogance.

"What happened to ' I'm sorry, are you okay?' " I said, rather calmly.

"Why should I be the one to say sorry? Didn't you see me coming?" He replied coldly.

"Well, didn't you see me coming too? Why did you chose to block my way?" I retorted.

"Maybe you shouldn't have been walking down the road with your head hung low, like a lost child."

That got me enraged. I glanced at his expensive attire and continued, "Oh, I see. You're one of those wealthy, prideful brats who think everyone should be affected by their presence. I hate to break it to you, but not everyone cares about your existence. Get off your high horse." I turned to leave, but his words stopped me.

"The problem with you poor people is that you always blame everything on being poor. Every conversation has to come back to me being wealthy and you, the complete opposite. "

I tightened my fists, his words getting to me.

"It must be so fun for you to not understand what it's like to be poor. To give up your life just to survive, to work every single day for a pittance while you sit in comfort, commanding us like slaves. We must wear the finest clothes and perfumes just to stand before you. You wealthy people are all the same, prideful, insolent, and ignorant." I snapped.

At that moment, another man approached looking quite polished, not in comparison to the other man though. He was surprised to see me and it was evident from his expression.

" Sir.. is everything okay?"He asked.

Before the young mister could respond, I chipped in, my anger still high.

" No, everything is not okay. Your master is being such a rude and arrogant jerk, don't y'all teach him manners in your high walls palace?"

They were both very shocked by my outburst. The second man who I guessed was his attendant quickly said,

" Ma'am, do you know who you're speaking to? I'd advice you to please take back your words, you could get into a lot of trouble"

I knew that but did I care? No!

" Keep your advice to yourself, or rather direct them to him. Pfft! So much for being gentlemen" I scoffed, storming towards the direction I was headed.

I could feel his eyes on me but I didn't look back. I heard the attendant say.

" Sir, I'm so sorry. Would you like to have any action taken?"

My heart skipped at this. What would he do?

" Jonathan, today seemed quite interesting" I heard him say instead.

My eyes narrowed in confusion at his words but I didn't stop to think about what he meant, instead I increased my pace and hurried off on my way.

The stable attendants were thrilled to see me, having been away from town for years now, and so were the horses I could tell. I had a fun time riding the horses and somehow, I managed to put the problems in my life to the side. It didn't last though as I was quickly reminded that I had the mating ball to attend. Unwillingly, I went back home.

I got an earful from Father as I was almost late for the ball. Mother hurriedly dressed me up, complaining the entire time of how uncooperative I was as a daughter. By the time she was done, I was so upset.

She made me face her, saying the words I had heard time and time again.

" You can't ruin this night, River. Remember what I said to you, you have to be at your best behavior tonight and get all the attention you can. We need this, for your unborn sibling."

I didn't respond. Partly because the corset was too tight and I was struggling to breathe. And partly because I had nothing to say to her.

Our carriage had arrived and father was already at the door, waiting. Mother and I got in and soon, the Coachman was riding us to the palace.

I stayed silent the entire ride. Even when we arrived and Father urged me to put on a smile. I did but I said nothing. We were directed through the huge gates after our names were checked on the attendance list. I heard Mother gasp as we entered the palace, her eyes scanning the massive room.

A couple of eyes were turned at our direction and low whispers were beginning to rise. I felt a surge of anxiety. The fancy decorations, the crowd of unfamiliar faces clad in elegant attires, and the weight of my family's expectations threatened to suffocate me.

Mother's grip on my arm tightened. "Smile, River. Show them you're worthy."

I forced a brighter smile, my eyes traveling around the room for the least friendly face. And then my eyes fell on him – the arrogant young man from earlier, standing across the room, his piercing green eyes locked onto mine.

2 - He's the Alpha!

My heart skipped a beat. What was he doing here?

He raised an eyebrow, a sly smile spreading across his face. I quickly looked away, my heart pounding in my chest.

Father, more desperate than he had ever been, began mingling with the crowd, introducing us to anyone who cared to listen, as his 'lovely wife and beautiful daughter'. I played along, exchanging polite smiles and hollow words.

As the night wore on, I found myself trapped in a never-ending cycle of shallow conversations and forced laughter.

Then the music paused, and the room fell silent. A figure emerged from the crowd, commanding attention.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we all know the reason we are present here tonight so let's welcome our Alpha Novah D'aveni."

My eyes widened as the young man from earlier stepped forward. My breath seized, my heartbeat doubling.

He's the Alpha!

"Tonight, I seek a mate, and a wife for myself and I believe that is why all of you are present so let the selection begin."

A shiver ran down my spine. The only words ringing in my head was, "He's the Alpha", how could I have known?

His gaze swept the room, his eyes lingering on each candidate as we lined up before him. When they met mine, I saw him smirk mischievously.

He strode towards me, his movements steady and calm.

"You!" he said, his deep voice dripping with condescension. "I must say, I'm surprised you cleaned up well. You look almost... presentable."

I felt a sting from his words, but I refused to let it show.

"Alpha," I curtsied, keeping my tone neutral.

The Alpha's smile grew wider, but his eyes remained cold. "You do remember me, right? Or am I the only one with the memory of earlier today?"

His voice was low and I could feel the eyes of everyone in the room piercing into me.

"Do tell me something, what makes you think you're worthy of being my mate?"

His tone was laced with disdain, and I felt my anger simmering.

"I didn't come here seeking your approval, Alpha," I replied, meeting his gaze. "I'm only here because of my family."

He chuckled, the sound sending shivers down my spine.

"Ah, how... refreshing. A woman who admits to being a pawn. I think I'll enjoy breaking you in."

The room was painfully silent, and I felt my face heat up with anger and embarrassment.

How dare he?

But before I could respond, Alpha Novah turned to the crowd.

"Let the dance begin. I'll choose my bride by the end of the night."

The music started, and he grasped my hand, pulling me onto the dance floor. His grip was tight and I had to struggle to maintain my balance as we danced.

Why did it feel like I had gotten myself into a big mess?

His fingers dug into my skin, bringing me back to my terrible reality.

" I am indeed surprised that you would show up here after your lecture about how we thread upon you poor people. Why did you come?" He asked

" To be chosen as my bride?" He answered himself.

I jerked back forcefully, creating a distance between us. " I told you, I didn't come here for you, Alpha."

His eyes flashed with amusement. " So what if I choose you to be my bride? "

The music swirled around us, but I felt suffocated. I gasped lightly at his words while he smirked vilianously. Through the corner of my eyes, I caught glimpses of my parents watching from the sidelines, their faces filled with hope and desperation.

I knew I had to escape this nightmare but the Alpha's grip only tightened on me.

"Why do I want so much to make you mine, River?" he whispered, his voice dripping with possession.

My heart stopped. Not only because of what he said but because I didn't tell him my name.

The music ended as quickly as it started, and Alpha Novah released me, his eyes scanning the room.

" I have chosen my bride" he announced.

The room fell quiet while all my heart did was sink.

This couldn't be happening.

Without thinking twice, I turned my back and ran out of the palace, entering the first carriage my eyes fell on.

^^^

"Why did you leave the ball in such a manner? You must return immediately and tender an apology to Alpha Novah, and you must also consent to wed him." Father declared.

"I shall not marry him." I retorted, glaring at him.

"Hear yourself, River. You were chosen as Alpha Novah's bride before the whole of Orkland. Should you refuse him, it will not only bring shame upon this household but render you unmarriageable."

"I have no desire to become a wife. I shall return to the convent and resume my role as a Sister. Coming to Orkland for the Mating Ball was a grave mistake." I replied.

"I would rather die than witness you disgrace me this way. You ought to be grateful that the Alpha selected you as his bride."

"He did not choose me out because he found me worthy; rather, it was driven by spite. Father, whether or not I agree to marry Alpha Novah, he'll bring ruin to the family. Moreover, this was not the arrangement I had with Mother. She promised that attending the ball would benefit your business. She never mentioned marriage; I was assured that I could return to the church after the Five Days Mating Ball." I desperately tried to explain.

However, all of my plea fell short. Father did not care and he was ready to make sure I understood that.

"You have no idea what you're saying. I do not care about what your mother promised. Know this: Had Alpha Novah not chosen you, I would have arranged your marriage to the most noble suitor after the Ball." He revealed, before turning and going to his chamber.

I faced my mother, who was seated on the couch.

"Is this true?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"I am sorry." She apologized, tears streaming down her face.

"So, you both wished to sell me for gain. Why am I surprised? This is the sort of thing you both have always done." I said, then I walked out on her, slamming the door to my room shut.

3 - You're mine now!

I shut my eyes painfully, trying hard to hold the tears.

My father, Roger Millbrook, had always hated me, not for being a girl, but because I was his only child, and was thus seen as a mere tool for profit.

At merely ten years old, he made me work for a saleswoman who mistreated me badly. I was poorly fed, frequently beaten, and constantly talked down upon.

At fifteen, I could no longer endure it and fled, but Father, who loved the money I generated for him every month, decided to send me to a convent. Not out of a wish for me to become a Sister, but to exploit the church's financial aid given to families with a single child training to become a Reverend. Though I was not mistreated at the convent, I found no joy in being exploited by my family.

When his greed grew, he sent me a letter shortly after my twentieth birthday. Rather than extend belated birthday wishes, it was an announcement of a Mating Ball held by an Alpha who sought a suitable bride, being one of the rare Alphas never to have a mate.

I returned home with hopes of persuading them-How could a Sister wed?

Yet, my mother deceived me, using her pregnancy to manipulate me, and my desire to please my father swayed me. I agreed to participate on the condition that I would not marry but only aid in gaining recognition for his business and securing enough money for raising a child properly.

But, I was deceived; both parents lied to me. Now, should I refuse, Alpha Novah may destroy both me and my family. If I agree, he will learn of my status as a Sister and bring ruin regardless.

I sighed deeply and murmured to myself. "What do I do?"

I slid down to the floor, leaning into the door and burying my face in my hands. I don't want to get married, I had grown to love my life as a Sister in the convent. How do I let all of that go for a man I barely even know?

I just wanted to scream my lungs out in frustration. I couldn't even cry.

What do I do? How was I supposed to know that he was Alpha Novah?

Despite the fact that my parents have never treated me right, I can't just let them be ruined by that man. These rich people are all so heartless. There were other ladies at the ball, more beautiful ladies from wealthier families than mine(if mine could even be considered as wealthy), they had higher status, they were perfect to be brides of an Alpha, why then did he choose me?

Of course, I know why. He was making me pay for insulting him, his ego had probably being damaged being insulted by a nobody in front of his attendant. That was the reason for this sudden condescendence. Why else would he want to settle for way lower than his standards?

An idea popped into my head. What if I tendered an apology? If I pleaded well enough, he would probably let this go. Then I wouldn't have to marry him anymore. I could go back to the Convent and continue my life and all of this would be over just the way it started.

This would work, right?

It felt like I was losing my mind and I was highly frustrated. I pulled myself up and walked out of the room, maybe some fresh air would help me think. Luckily, neither mother nor father was at the living room. I walked through the door as quietly as I could, sneaking through the frontyard like a thief. It was late at night but the moon brightened up my path.

I walked through the quiet path, the cool night air a welcome change from the suffocating tension at home.

As I turned a corner, I heard someone call my name. Turning abruptly, my eyes fell on a familiar figure.

"Furgil?" I whispered, my heart melting.

His voice echoed in my head, a soothing melody I never seemed to forget "It's actually you,River"

We hadn't seen each other in years, not since I left for the convent.

Furgil approached me.

"It's been forever, River. I... I didn't know you were back in town. What are you doing out here?" he asked, his voice low and smooth.

"I needed some air," I replied, feeling a mix of emotions.

His gaze softened. "Trouble at home?"

I nodded. He knew, as always!

I hesitated for a moment trying to figure out what to say next. Furgil and I were childhood friends, infact we were more than that. He had feelings for me and it was reciprocated.

And then I was sent to the Convent. I had left without telling him, I only sent a letter about a month later. He never replied and I knew I had hurt him. With all the troubles I was facing, it never crossed my mind that I would meet him again.

" Furgil, I... "

He stopped me.

" No, don't say anything. We haven't seen each other in a very long time so let's not ruin the moment."

" Right!" I mumbled.

" Do you wanna watch the stars while you tell me all about the Convent?" He asked.

A small smile crept unto my face.

" Sure! "

We walked to the nearby hill, the moon casting a silver glow over the landscape.

I told him everything there was to say and he listened. And as I finished, silence settled between us.

"I missed you," he whispered.

My heart fluttered.

" I'm sorry for leaving like that, Furgil"

He didn't respond for a while, his eyes fixed on the stars.

" What brought you back?" He eventually asked.

I didn't want to lie to him but I couldn't tell him that I had come to attend the mating ball.

" Well, I... Mother is expecting so she needed some help around the house." I said.

He finally looked at me, the intense look in my eyes making goosebumps crawl up my skin.

" That means you'll be home for a while?" he asked.

I reluctantly nodded, feeling terrible for not saying the truth.

" Yes."

Furgil's fingers found mine, surprising me but I didn't pull away. It gave me the much needed comfort. Slowly, his face began to inch towards mine and my heart began to race.

But just as our lips were about to touch, a harsh voice cut through the night.

"River Millbrook."

Alpha Novah's voice.

My heart sank.

I hurriedly pulled my hand away, making Furgil look at me in confusion.

" Hanging out with another man at your fiance's favourite spot, that's something, River."

Furgil's face twisted in shock.

" Fiance?"

I jerked to my feet.

" Alpha Novah, did you follow me? " I growled.

Furgil gasped at this.

" Alpha Novah?" he shot to his feet and bowed immediately.

Alpha Novah's gaze narrowed on him, "Leave!" He commanded, his voice harsh and cold.

Furgil didn't look back as he scurried away, leaving just me and the Alpha. I bit my lips, glaring at him.

" What do you want from me?"

Alpha Novah took solid strides towards me, the atmosphere around us tense.

" You're my bride, River." he said coldly.

" I cannot marry you. I'm a Reverend Sister at a church, we do not wed. " I immediately said without thinking.

" I know that. Which makes it even more fun cause I know you're pure."

I felt the chill of his hand trailing down my cheek.

" You're pure, aren't you?"

I jerked back in disgust.

" Alpha Novah, do not torture me this way. I am sorry for disregarding you earlier today. I didn't know you were the Alpha, I am sorry. Please, spare my family and I. Pick another bride for I know this is nothing but a revenge scheme." I said, trying my best to sound more remorseful than angered.

Alpha Novah chuckled mysteriously.

" That has nothing to do with this, my dear."

He leaned in, his breath fanning my neck as he whispered into my ear,

" There's no other bride for me than you. You're mine now, River Milbrook."

Then he walked away as suddenly as he came in.

My heart sank. Indeed, this was a very big mess.

4 - Wedding ceremony!

By the next morning, I was tired of thinking and crying. I had barely slept after sneaking back home and now I stood at my bedroom window, gazing out at the tranquil garden below. The morning sunlight danced across the flowers, a sharp contrast to the turmoil brewing inside me.

But my reverie was short-lived.

A luxurious carriage appeared from the woods, carrying the royal palace' crest. My breath seized momentarily.

I quickly pulled the curtain shut and ran my my hand through my hair. I waited, quietly, hoping the carriage wasn't coming here, hoping my worst nightmare was not just about to come true.

It was useless.

Seconds later, I heard a knock on the door.

"River, Alpha Novah's carriage has arrived," Mother called out, her voice laced with excitement.

My heart dropped.

This can't be happening.

" River... " Mother called again when I didn't respond.

I pulled open the door to meet her face all glowed up and eager. I swallowed, ignoring the lump in my throat.

I descended the stairs, my feet heavy with reluctance.

Alpha Novah stood in our living room, looking charming in his formal attire. The room suddenly seemed to small for his royal highness to be present in.

Father was standing a little distance away from him, his face beaming with the pleasure he felt.

He sighted me and immediately began to speak.

" Oh River, you're finally here. I was just telling the Alpha that he shouldn't have bothered to come. We would have brought you to the palace ourselves. "

Alpha Novah's eyes was fixed on me and I felt heat stir up in me.

" She deserves to be honorably treated and I don't mind doing that, she is my bride afterall and after tonight... " he paused, his eyes gleaming with triumph, " my wife."

My eyes widened. We were getting married tonight? What was all the rush for?

The words were stuck in my throat, it was so difficult to look into his eyes and still be able to speak properly.

"Are you ready to leave?"

Mother chipped in before I could even say anything.

" Yes she is, Alpha. I will quickly go bring down her bags."

" Don't pack much, she'd be provided with everything she needs in the palace." Alpha Novah stated.

Mother was absolutely thrilled to hear this. She hurried upstairs, returning in barely five minutes with a trunk that I knew was probably empty.

" Alpha, our daughter is ready." She said.

" Very well, then. The carriage is waiting." He turned and began to walk away majestically.

The lump in my throat had gotten wider. Father approached, a mixture of relief and calculation on his face.

"River, remember the reason you're doing this. Do not mess this up for us. " he cautioned.

I bit back a retort.

Mother's eyes brimmed with tears. I didn't know what the reason was. She obviously wanted this all along.

"Be happy, dear." she whispered.

But I knew I wouldn't find happiness with Alpha Novah.

They led me to the carriage, waving excitedly as it drove away. I was far from excited.

The carriage ride to the palace was tense. Alpha Novah's silence was oppressive.

As we arrived at the palace, I felt a sense of foreboding. The opulent halls seemed to close in around me. We were greeted by the palace staff as Alpha Novah led me through the doors.

I looked around and I realized I was standing in the grand throne room.

"Meet my family." he announced.

The room fell silent as I looked at them warily. I bowed respectfully, my hands and legs trembling.

Who would have ever thought that I'd stand before the Duke and Duchess of this great county.

His mother, the Duchess, gazed at me, her face blank of emotions.

" What is your name, young lady?" She asked calmly.

" River Milbrook" I said, trying my best not to fumble.

"River Millbrook," she repeated. "I see why our son chose you, you're indeed a sight to behold."

" She's so ordinary!" The young lady sitted beside her spoke up. Her mother shot her a glare making her recoil. I immediately guessed that she was Alpha Novah's younger sister.

And of course, I guessed that she didn't like me at all.

The Duke of New Vimland, Alpha Novah's father, scrutinized me.

" I personally think that you're unworthy of our bloodline," he growled," but if our son chose you then it's none our business. " he added.

I swallowed, keeping my head high despite the turmoil I felt inside.

Alpha Novah was standing beside me but he didn't say a word. Not like I was expecting him to stand up for me or something.

"I am honored to stand before you." I said, genuflecting again.

The Duchess said, with her head raised high.

" Son, take her in and have her prepared for the wedding ceremony tonight. You are dismissed, my dear."

Alpha Novah didn't say a word as I trailed behind him. I desperately wanted to ask him why he was doing this to me. His family didn't even like me and I was totally sure, he didn't either.

This was such a a nightmare.

I arrived at a private chamber where three female servants stood with their heads bowed.

" Get her prepared for the ceremony!" Alpha Novah commanded and just like that he walked away.

^^^

The palace gardens were transformed into a breathtaking wedding venue. Golden lanterns hung from crystal-encrusted trees. Rose petals carpeted the aisle.

A majestic archway, adorned with diamonds and pearls, framed the altar.

The high priest stood beneath, his robes shimmering in the soft light. The only people present was the royal palace family. They didn't even invite my parents.

Alpha Novah's family sat at the front. Their faces still wearing blank expressions.

I took my place beside Alpha Novah. His eyes locked onto mine. A fleeting spark of victory played on his eyes.

The ceremony began but my mind was far away. The dress I had on was uncomfortable, it was heavy and it clung to my body, way too tight.

The high priest's voice echoed in the large space.

"Today, we gather to unite Alpha Novah, son of the great Duke and Duchess of New Vimland, with River Millbrook, daughter of Roger Millbrook."

Alpha Novah's face remained blank, his eyes boring into me.

The Priest began.

"Alpha Novah, do you take River Millbrook as your wife, to protect and cherish her, to honor and obey the laws of our land?"

"I do," Alpha Novah replied.

The priest turned to me.

"River Millbrook, do you take Alpha Novah as your husband, to stand by his side, to support and obey him, to bear his children and carry on the legacy of our land?"

I hesitated.

Alpha Novah's gaze warned me.

"I do," I whispered.

The priest pronounced us husband and wife.

The Alpha didn't kiss me. Instead, he stretched his hand to me, his eyes cold and calculating. When I didn't take his hand, he bent down and swooped me into his arms before I realized what was happening.

" Alpha... " I made to protest, my skin beginning to boil from his touch.

" Shh!" he cooed. " Don't say a word!" he commanded.

He carried me away from the garden under the wafchful eyes of everyone present. As we arrived at his chambers, he put me down abruptly.

My heart was racing in my chest. The only thing I could think about was what would happen now. Was he going to touch me? Was he...

" Get in!" He commanded again, walking before me.

I followed him like a lost sheep. The doors were drawn shut immediately. The room was dimly lit. Candles flickered.

I looked around the room with caution and when my eyes fell back on him, he was undressing. My breath hitched and I took a wary step backwards. He turned back to me, his lips curling into a wicked smirk.

" What? Scared?" He teased, caressing my body with his eyes. It almost felt like I was standing bare in front of him.

That was when my eyes fell on a figure lying on the bed behind the curtains.

A woman!

He followed my eyes, smiling with ease when he saw what got my attention.

" You may come out!"

She did. A woman with raven hair and porcelain skin, clad in nothing else but a see-through robe.

Alpha Novah slipped his arm around her waist and kissed her deeply, right in front of me.

" Elara, meet my wife, " he began after the kiss," River Milbrook. "

She smiled.

" You have such a pretty name." She purred.

My heart was gripped with an emotion I didn't understand.

"Alpha, what is this?" I managed to ask.

He chuckled sinisterly.

" Elara is my companion tonight."

5 - Taking what's mine!

It felt like my world had come crumbling down. Another woman on our wedding night, who in his right senses did such?

Not like it mattered to me, it was in fact a good thing as I wouldn't have to be the one beneath him tonight but still, why did it claw at my heart so much?

How could he be so shameless? Did his family know he was doing this?

Worse still, did my parents know this would happen tonight?

Then why did he marry me? What was all of this for?

I wanted to hurl all this questions at him but I bit my lips instead and focused on trying to breathe.

" Surely, you didn't think I'd have you in my bed tonight, did you?" Alpha Novah said, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

" Or... do you want to be in my bed tonight?" he added, his eyes staring flirtatiously at me.

I was repulsed. And I was pained at the same time. Yet, I had to say something else this shameless man would keep coming up with conclusions.

" Permit me to take my leave, Alpha Novah." was all I could muster, lowering my head.

" Ah, you want to leave now? Just when I thought I'd have a fun night." He said, feigning a frown.

I watched the lady trail her hands on his chest, dragging his attention.

" Let her go, Alpha. I'll give you just as much pleasure." She whispered seductively. I watched him - my supposed husband - take her lips again and somehow, I couldn't watch anymore.

I turned and walked out of the room, not looking back to see their reactions. I'm sure they didn't even notice me leaving.

It was laughable. But why did I want to cry so much?

An attendant was by the door, she bowed on seeing me and remained there, as if waiting for my instruction.

" Where's my room?" I asked.

She didn't act surprised and it dawned on me that everything had been prearranged.

Again, I couldn't help but ask myself, why did he choose me as his bride?

The attendant led me to another chamber, a little distance from his. Once I was inside alone, I let out a sigh, a very heavy one.

I shut my eyes and at that point, tears began to fall. What had happened? My life was perfect, the Convent was treating me well. They were making plans to send me out to another church as a well-trained Reverend. And now, I was married, not just to anyone, to the Alpha. It seemed like my life had just taken a very drastic turn and now it was heading for destruction.

Tears streamed down my face. Uncontrollable sobs racked my body. I collapsed onto the bed.

My mind went back to Furgil. I wonder how he must be feeling now, I was such a a jerk to have not told him the truth.

Why did I agree to this farce?

I tried my best to be quiet but I wanted to yell in agony. I hated everything, I hated everyone. Would I ever forgive my parents for putting me in such a mess?

Where do I go from here? I can't continue like this. I cried until exhaustion claimed me.

Sleep offered a fleeting escape. But dawn broke, and reality crashed back.

I woke up drained, physically and emotionally but I was determined.

I had to escape. I wouldn't spend another night in this palace.

It took barely seconds for me to conclude this thought in my head. I grabbed a small bag and filled it with essentials.

Before I slipped out of the room, I said a little prayer, asking God to help me out of this mess. I would find my way to the Convent and then, I'd leave with the rest of the sisters out of the county. Alpha Novah didn't care about me that much to come after me, even beyond the county.

I just hoped I was right.

The corridors were empty. It was still dark as I made my way to the palace gates, my heart racing in my chest. I kept looking over my shoulders. Freedom beckoned.

But just as I reached the entrance, a hand clamped on my shoulder.

" Leaving so soon, River?" Alpha Novah's voice whispered in my ear.

I spun around, my heart in my mouth. His eyes gleamed with amusement.

" Did you really think you could escape me?"

I tried to shake off his grip but his hold tightened.

" Where do you think you're going?" he demanded, his eyes turning cold.

" Away from you," I dared to say.

Alpha Novah laughed wickedly.

" Why? Is it because of last night? Did I hurt you?" He said, his voice low like he was trying to not be heard.

I glared at him.

" I know you're the Alpha but bringing another woman home on your wedding night is unethical." I blurted out.

" Then why did you choose me as your bride?" I added. It was only when I heard him snicker and saw the simper on his face that it dawned on me what I was doing.

I was giving my hurt away.

" So my actions did hurt you?" he scoffed." So much for being tough!"

I never said I was tough. I wanted to snap at him but I had already said too much so I remained silent.

" Still though, running away is something else, River."

" Then let me go." I was half pleading and half demanding.

Alpha Novah took a solid step towards me and when I tried to step back, he slipped his hand around my waist and swooped me off my feet. My heart began racing all over again.

" Put me down!" I tried, to no avail.

His hold around me was tightened and struggling only hurt me so I stopped. He was heading towards his chambers, ignoring all the eyes that were staring at us. I caught that of his little sister, she was standing by the corner and did very little to acknowledge her brother, the Alpha.

Alpha Novah slammed the door to his chambers shut. I thought he would put me down but he continued, till he reached the bed. My heart skipped. I had no means of foretelling his next action as his face was devoid of any emotion.

" Put me down!" I tried again.

He did. But his hand didn't leave my waist and we were way too close for comfort.

" Tell me, River Milbrook, you have no desire to be my wife?" Alpha Novah said.

Was that even a question? I intended to throw at him but his breath was fanning upon my face and my brain seemed to stop functioning for a second.

" You broke the vows, Alpha Novah." I responded.

He chuckled again. The next thing, his hand was trailing down my cheeks.

" The vows meant nothing!"

I was angered.

" Then why? Why did you choose me to be your bride? Why didn't you choose someone with whom the vows would mean something? Someone like Elara?" I stated angrily.

His grip around my waist tightened, pulling me even closer to himself.

" Elara was just for one night. You are my wife."

" Well, I don't want to be. Why don't you get that?" I was yelling now.

" You don't have a choice, dear. You don't get to decide if you want to be my wife or not because you already are." His voice was calm but the firm.

My eyes were beginning to moisten as I was getting so frustrated. Being so close to him made it difficult for me to think, or even breathe.

" You're an Alpha, the son of a Duke and Duchess. Your status is ten times higher than mine. Why would you stoop so low for mere revenge?" I said, my voice filled with spite.

He chuckled again, this time without mirth.

" This isn't called revenge, love"

He leaned in to my ear and my breath seized completely. I shut my eyes, wondering what he would do next.

" It's called taking what's mine!"

Just like that, the feel of his touch was no longer there and when I opened my eyes, he was gone.

6 - Seeking answers!

Later that day, I sat in my chambers lost in thought. I hadn't seen Alpha Novah since he walked out on me earlier today. I am kind of glad, I mean. Being around him made me act rash and uncollected, let's not even talk about how I seem to lose my breath every time and he obviously loves to revel in it.

I'll avoid him in any way I can.

The door opened pulling me out of my thoughts. I thought he was him and I immediately rose to my feet but instead, my eyes fell on his sister.

She approached me, trying her best to maintain a smile.

" River, do you perhaps have sometime to spare. I wanted to talk to you." she said.

Her eyes didn't hold the former disapproving gaze but I still felt wary.

" Sure." I replied, taking my seat back on the bed.

" I... umm... we didn't exactly set off on the right foot. I'm Virna!" She said.

I managed a smile.

" It's nice to officially meet you, Virna." I responded." Please, take a seat!"

She did, on the cushion opposite the bed.

" You said you wanted to talk to me." I said.

" Well, yes." It looked like she was hesitating.

I remained silent, waiting for her to continue.

" I saw what happened this morning." She finally said.

I raised my brows in question.

" At the gates. You and Novah." She clarified.

" Oh! "

" You know, I didn't expect you to want to run away. I thought... I thought you seduced my brother into choosing you which I why I was rude to you at first. I didn't know you were forced into it." Virna explained.

I didn't say anything to this, my mind was blank.

Virna continued.

" You see, I hate it when he uses other girls to try to forget her. I hate it when he acts like she never existed. When he mentioned he was going to choose a wife, I was pained. And when he chose you, I felt like he was settling for way lesser than she used to be. I felt angry, like I know she would be."

At this point, I was lost. I had no idea what or who she was talking about.

" Pardon me but I do not know who you are referring to."

Virna looked at me for a minute, I could tell she was contemplating whether or not to divulge any more information to me.

" His mate!" Virna finally said.

I was perplexed. I thought Alpha Novah was one of the rare alphas to never have a mate. So he had one?

" She's dead." Virna added.

" Oh!" I exclaimed.

" What happened to her?" I dared to ask.

At this, Virna rose.

" I am not in position to tell you any more than I have" she said.

I stood up too and reached for her hand.

" Please, I really need to know. I am married to a man I don't even know and it's scary. Any information about him would be very useful." I pleaded with her.

Virna didn't respond for what felt like ages, and then, she carefully pulled her hand away.

" I don't really know much. No one remembers her face, but we know she was here and it's so painful." she said, her pain reflecting on her face.

" What happened to her?" I asked again.

Virna shook her head.

" I won't be the one to tell you that. Novah would be mad if he finds out. He goes into a rage anytime someone mentions her." She explained.

I sighed in disappointment when she added.

" But you could ask Zeref. He's our cousin, he knows more and is not directly under Novah's command. If he wishes, he might disclose."

" Where can I find him?" I immediately asked.

" The second wing. Tell them I sent you." She said.

I smiled lightly in appreciation.

" Thank you, Virna."

She nodded and exited my room without another word.

Few minutes after she was left, I was out to seek out Zeref. The guards at the second wing bowed to me on recognizing who I was. I told them Virna had directed me to Zeref, as she said and they took me to him.

In the palace library. He sat surrounded by ancient tomes.

" River, Alpha Novah's wife." he acknowledged on sighting me.

He sounded elderly but he didn't look much older than the Alpha.

" What brings you here?" He asked.

I contemplated briefly on the right words to use before deciding.

" I've come seeking answers." I said.

" Concerning the Alpha's previous mate." I added

Zeref looked up at me, like he wasn't expecting that.

" Does he know you're here?" He asked.

I shook my head.

" You could get into a lot of trouble, you know?" He said, pushing the book in front of him aside.

" Does that mean you won't tell me?" I returned.

He didn't respond for a while, before gesturing at a chair. I sat.

" What did Virna tell you?" he asked, leaning back into his chair.

I was a bit shocked as I hadn't mentioned her but I didn't bother to show it.

" That no one remembers her face but they all know she existed and that the Alpha goes into a rage whenever she is mentioned." I explained.

Zeref nodded.

" I want to know what happened to her." I added boldly.

" Well... she died. The Alpha killed her." He said.

My eyes widened in shock. That was not what I was expecting.

Zeref saw my reaction and continued.

" Novah has a corrupted heart. We don't know how it happened but whenever there's a blood moon, he goes into a blood rage. No one around him can be scared during that time."

Slowly, I placed piece by piece in my head and it dawned on me.

" So, he killed her during a blood rage?"

" Yes. And he has never forgiven himself since then."

I stayed quiet for a minute, digesting the information I had just received.

" Didn't she know about his blood rage?" I asked.

" She didn't exactly know how serious it could be, and that Novah recognizes no one in that state. I suppose she thought she could calm him down." Zeref explained.

" Oh! She couldn't." I mumbled to myself.

" She couldn't!" Zeref repeated, watching me keenly.

How stupid of her! I thought.

" One last question, Why did Alpha Novah choose me?" I asked.

Zeref's expression turned blank.

" Only Novah can answer that." He said.

When my face fell, he chose to reveal a little more.

" When Novah snapped out of his blood rage, he couldn't believe she was actually dead. Especially after her body disappeared mysteriously and all of a sudden, no one could remember what she looked like. He was desperate, searched every nook and cranny for her and when he got nothing, he changed. He became someone else entirely."

" The women, they're just a distraction from the pain he's trying to hide. I know he still hears her voice and every time he goes into a blood rage, the memory of killing her is what drives him to kill more."

I felt myself go tense but I listened, I was the one who wanted information afterall.

" Know this, River, do not get carried away by Novah or the charms you may think he has. His marriage to you was just formality, he needs an heir. I can assure you that marrying you meant nothing to him." Zeref said.

I sighed, rising to my feet. Why did it feel like his words were a steel knife piercing through my chest?

" I'll keep that in mind. Thank you for your time and information, it is highly appreciated." I said, bowing slightly before him.

" You're welcome." Zeref responded.

I turned to leave and then I remembered something.

" What was her name?" I asked.

Zeref paused for a while, his eyes scrutinizing my face and then he answered,

" Andora!"
