Caught in a whirlwind of betrayal and deceit, Luna Artemis stands accused of a crime she doesn't remember, facing the ultimate punishment of death. In a dramatic turn of events, Alpha Ares, a formidable and enigmatic figure, claims her as his mate, only to reject her moments later. Stripped of her dignity and her wolf, Artemis must navigate through a treacherous world to uncover the truth behind her father's murder and reclaim her rightful place. Will she rise from the ashes of her shattered life, or will the weight of betrayal crush her spirit forever?
"I reject Luna Artemis as my mate. She was caught in bed with a stranger, meaning that she would sell the pack out. The punishment for treachery is death," Alpha Zeus said with a sigh.
For the first time since the Alpha's assassination one month prior, the Olympus Pack was a flurry of activity. While the pack grieved for him, it was no longer safe to function without an Alpha.
Three daughters belonged to the late Alpha. Serena, the first, relished her time in Neon City and took full advantage of the festivities. Her father disowned her two years ago.
Ruby, his third daughter, turned nine months old, but she still hadn't found a partner. Additionally, her wolf was not as strong as Artemis's, her older sister's. The late Alpha's second daughter was Artemis.
Her father found that she had a Luna wolf at. She was a formidable warrior, but she would never be able to unseat him. Therefore, her partner would be the one to lead the pack whether or not she mated with an Alpha wolf.
Luna, Artemis's wolf, was very strong, but until a few weeks ago, she was blind and couldn't tell who their partner was.
In order to offer Luna the chance to choose her partner among the unmated Alphas, the pack agreed to host the Alphas conference in their pack as they waited anxiously for Luna to pick her partner.
Everyone was taken aback when it was revealed that Zeus, one of the most formidable fighters, was her partner. It was common knowledge that Artemis didn't get to see Zeus all that often until the Alphas conference.
On the third day of the Alphas conference, Luna Artemis's mate, Zeus, surreptitiously attended the coronation, which was scheduled to take place a few hours before the conference adjourned at midday. The day was also his coronation, since he had marked Valeria the night before.
A lot happened last night, most of which Artemis could not recall, but the mark on her neck caused her to blush throughout the entire process of getting ready for her coronation.
"Val, you really look lovely," Ruby gushed to her older sister. A smile played at her lips, but her eyes were far away. Valeria was too happy to take note of the difference in her younger sister's appearance.
"Ruby, you look very beautiful too. Let's not be late. It's not every time that a coronation is hosted together with an Alphas conference."
This coronation was the largest because it took place at the largest summit of Alphas, making it impossible for any Alpha to miss-though some did.
With a start, Ruby said, "What about dad, what do you think of him?" observing Artemis's smile disappear.
Because Artemis constantly took the show but never gave it back, Ruby never liked her. Valeria was a tough woman in addition to having an attractive appearance. The sisters were viewed by many as being inseparable.
"Dad is no more, Ruby. We have to accept that. I will make sure that after this coronation, I get the strongest warriors to go search for his corpse and Serena. Dad must be buried with the respect of an Alpha, but that can only be after we ensure the safety of the pack."
Artemis was quite familiar with her role as the pack's leader. They had long since ceased to grieve the late Alpha, since no one at the Olympus Pack was permitted to be in grief for longer than a week.
Artemis was excited to be crowned because she wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to locate his corpse, even if his memories would always remain in her heart. Though Ruby's expression was uneasy as she revealed her plans, Zeus had agreed to assist her.
"Serena cut ties with the pack. She isn't worth it. As for dad, his corpse would be rotten by now. No one would be able to recognize it."
Artemis firmly stated, "Even if it's just his skeleton, I will recognize it." Artemis continued, to which Ruby turned away and grimaced, "as for Serena, that is what the warrior said, but we didn't hear it from her lips. I still think that father was wrong to disown her but for as long as I am concerned, someone might be behind it."
The diamond clip Ruby was holding dropped when her hand in her sister's hair tensed. She took it up fast. "Do you have anyone in mind?"
Artemis shook her head, but inside her, she was boiling with rage at whoever killed her father when he was routinely driving around the pack to see how it was doing. "How can that be?"
As she assisted Artemis with her stilettos, Ruby grinned slightly in satisfaction at the response.
"Anyway, I heard rumors that Alpha Aresaccepted the invitation to the Alphas conference this time, but no one has seen him since it began. Could it be that he wanted to pay homage to dad? That man carries death with him. It would be better that he doesn't come."
Alpha Denzel's name made Artemis tense up a little. Other than what the warriors told her, she had never seen him before. Her perception of everyone, including Alpha Denzel, remained unaffected by it.
"Ruby, no Alpha goes about killing anyone for no reason, but with Alpha Denzel's busy schedule, I doubt that he accepted our invitation. If not, then where has he been these few days? The conference ends tomorrow."
Ruby wanted to say more, but a voice from outside was muffled and reverberated through a microphone.
The MC said, "We are calling on Luna Artemis to say her vows," from outside. It implied that Luna Artemis had not been invited to Zeus's coronation. That was not how things were done, and Artemis was resentful.
But with everyone present, there was nothing she could do right now. Everyone applauded Artemis and her sister as they went out, but she couldn't help but feel uneasy because Zeus had already been crowned the Alpha without her approval or attendance.
For that to have been completed without her, there has to be a problem somewhere. The entire auditorium, where the ceremony was taking place, was packed, with all eyes on the damsel making her entrance.
Ruby shot Alpha Zeus a knowing glance and vanished into the throng. Zeus Alpha got up and moved to stand next to Artemis.
Artemis said to him, "You were coronated without my presence and confirmation," but her rage was well hidden and didn't come through.
Her long hair and beautiful brown eyes gave her the innocence of a child, while her sparkling low back dress made her appear like a goddess. However, Zeus had not even met her eyes and had not acknowledged her beauty. Furthermore, he showed little interest in providing a response to her inquiry.
Alpha Zeus cut the MC off abruptly, "Luna Artemis, do you...?" His elegant and graceful presence was enhanced by his white suit.
Zeus interrupted, "Wait, I have something to say," as Artemis gave him a perplexed expression.
"Zeus, what is going on?"
Zeus looked fierce for a moment, and he spoke loud enough for everyone to hear. "You think you can spend the night with another man and behave as if everything is fine? You are no angel, Artemis."
Confusion shot through the arena. The throngs of onlookers and the Alphas' expressions of appreciation gradually changed to ones of disgust. Artemis had tears in her eyes immediately.
Despite her tough front, she was broken by this charge because she couldn't recall it. Her voice broke and she shuddered, saying, "I don't understand what you are talking about. I only spent the night with you."
Understanding the pack constitution, that charge had grave repercussions, including death.
"Everyone, look on your phone," said Alpha Zeus, smirking as he tapped a button on his phone.
He handed his phone to Artemis, who was at a loss for words. "See for yourself."
Artemis's grasp on the phone trembled, her knees giving way, her breath catching as she viewed the photo of herself in her underwear with an unknown man.
It didn't appear to be altered. She started having trouble breathing and managed to say only a few words, "No, I thought it was you. I don't know that man."
Someone yelled, "The late Alpha's second daughter is a tramp," from the throng.
"And a liar," said an other person.
"Even after this evidence, she still denies it."
"She has to die, just like her father."
Zeus squatted and picked up his phone, a smirk decorating the corner of his lips.
"Stop pretending, Artemis. You are not worthy to bear my mark, or be my Luna. Your junior sister is a much better choice."
Artemis was afraid to say anything because she had nothing to support her innocence. Even worse, she was completely forgetful.
She was crying and had her head lowered in shame when she heard Zeus call, "Ruby, come here."
She lifted her head subconsciously and saw her sister, grinning, approach Zeus's side. A stab to the heart tore through Artemis.
Something horrible was going on right in front of her eyes, but she was too busy running the pack's business to notice it.
Even her pack members, to whom she devoted her life to rescuing them in battle, turned against her with disparaging insults, making the situation even more horrific.
Referring to Ruby, Zeus directed his gaze toward the MC and declared, "She should be coronated." Artemis remained hopeful that Ruby would turn down the offer if she wasn't guilty in any of this.
Ruby was also an outgoing girl who disliked running the pack's operations. Artemis asked, her eyes crimson with fear at what was about to happen, "Ruby, what is going on?"
It must have been Zeus's identical photo that convinced the beta and every other notable member of the pack to support his coronation.
Artemis's younger sister was sworn in as the Luna, and she was speechless and overcome with embarrassment.
The words she feared most were hurled at her with such carelessness that her eyes were obscured with tears.
"I reject Luna Artemis as my mate. She was caught in bed with a stranger, meaning that she would sell the pack out. The punishment for treachery is death," Alpha Zeus said with a sigh.
He no longer needed Valeria, having won both the Alpha title and his heart on the same day.
Artemis felt the mark on her neck burning, and her mate bond cracking. This was about her pack as much as it was about her.
She would be slain and Zeus, the true traitor, would gain ownership of the pack if she were to accept the rejection. Ruby was Artemis's own sister, and she didn't want to think that she was engaged in this.
She yelled, her eyes full of tears, "No. I won't accept it. I was with you last night," but she was dismayed by the incredulous glances in her pack mates' eyes.
To make matters worse, no one spoke up for her. As one of her pack members cried, "Liar, we all saw the pictures. There are Alphas and Betas. Don't embarrass yourself," the others concurred and began chanting in support of Alpha Zeus and Luna Ruby.
If only Artemis had the backing of her pack, she would have refused to put up with Zeus, but since it looked like an impossible goal, Artemis's hope was dashed.
She whispered, "I accept your rejection," while crying. Her heart ached, but not as much as the betrayal she had to endure. The mark on her neck vanished with a scorching feeling, and the connection was severed.
With her soul crushed, her heart torn, and her wolf wounded, Artemis stood hopelessly in front of the throng.
Zeus gave the instruction, "Sit on the floor."
Artemis asked, "What?" She was shocked by what she heard. She was proud and would never bow to anyone, much less sit on the floor, even if she was the second daughter of the Alpha and had a Luna wolf.
Ruby shoved her hard before she realized what was going on. She lost her equilibrium and landed hard on the floor with a bang, stunned by the sudden move and the person who made it.
Ruby grinned. Now was Artemis's chance to make amends for all those years she had stolen the show.
Artemis was covered with hands and was moaning in agony. She was left in her underwear after her dress was ripped and her expensive shoes were forcefully removed off her legs. Her lovely face was marred by slaps from all directions as she sobbed without drawing sympathy.
Artemis was breathing heavily. The punches and kicks were becoming too much for her to handle, and she was going to die. Although her wolf was doing everything in her might to cure her, fresh wounds were inflicted upon her before she had a chance to protect herself.
"STOP!" came from the front door of the auditorium, the location of all this. It was a thundering male voice. Everyone shivered at the sight of the man with the dark eyes and charcoal black curly hair, clothed in a black suit, black shirt, and black leather shoes.
