A young werewolf, Lena, bent on revenge due to her brother's betrayal allies with the Alpha of the rival Blackfang pack, Logan. United, they stand against a powerful creature threatening their world. With Lena growing in power from the Moonstone, darkness comes forth, and she must discover her own strength. A dangerous and perilous journey lies ahead for Lena and her pack as they fight to save their world from some unknown evil lurking in the shadows.
Lena stood at the edge of the forest, her exhalations like mist visible in the chill of the autumn night. The full moon provided just enough light to cast everything in the forest into strange silhouettes that seemed to dance, giving off shivering shadows. She felt that pull in her all too familiar now, and yet it always felt that it guided her back here, where everything had changed.
Three years earlier, on a night much like this, she had been a different person. So innocent, so naïve, so blinded, perhaps, to the world lurking in the unseen shadows. That all came before the betrayal of so-called family, before knowing what she should be, the werewolf blood running hot in her veins.
Her dad always had stories of that place, with creatures living in the darkness, who waited for their prey. She always laughed them off as legends, but now she realized the truth about them. The werewolves were real, and closer she would have ever imagined.
And how her heart ached thinking of it-all because of her brother, Ethan. He'd been the one to betray her, to reveal the secret to the very people who hunted their kind. He'd sold them out for power, aligning himself with the enemy pack called the Blackfangs. She had watched in horror as her parents were killed in the ensuing battle, their blood staining the ground red.
And since that night, she vowed to have her revenge. She had trained without relent to get stronger, to improve upon her abilities, and most importantly, to learn to control the beast inside of her. The forest was her haven then-a place which she let her humanity go and became just herself.
But tonight, something was different. The air hummed with an eerie kind of electricity, and she felt change was afoot. Deeper and deeper into the woods she went, her senses raised, and finally, she felt the presence of someone behind her. The sound of footstep after footstep-it must be someone. She whirled around to meet whomever, her heart hammering in her chest.
"Who's there?" she demanded, her voice level despite the fear that had seized her.
A figure emerged from the shadows, and Lena's breath caught in her throat. It was Logan, the Alpha of the Blackfang pack. He was tall and imposing, his piercing blue eyes seeming to bore into hers.
"Lena," he said, his voice smooth and cold. "I've been expecting you."
She clenched her fists, feeling the familiar rage rise within her. "What is it you want, Logan? Haven't you taken enough?"
Logan grinned. "I wish to strike a deal."
"A deal? Why would I trust you after all this?" Lena chuckled sarcastically.
"Because you hate Ethan as much as I do," he replied, stepping closer to her. "Ethan betrayed us both. He killed your parents and left me to die. We share a common enemy."
Lena's mind was racing. She detested Logan with every fiber of her being, yet he was right. Ethan had to pay for what he had done and if working with Logan was the only avenue to make that happen, she had no choice.
"What do you have in mind?" she asked in a very low tone.
His eyes flashed, dangerous, sharp. "We team up, destroy Ethan and his pack. Once he's dead, we part ways."
Lena didn't want to trust Logan, but he had her at a weak moment. Revenge seared her more than fear burned her. "Very well," she agreed. "But if you cross me, I'll kill you myself."
Logan nodded, a predatory smile sliding onto his face. "Understood."
As they shook hands and sealed the alliance, which wasn't so easy for her, Lena could not get the impression out of her head that she was making a deal with the devil. The road ahead spilled treacherousness, full of danger and duplicity. But she was determined to pass it at any rate.
Right as she had a chance to leave, Logan's face morphed, his eyes squinting over her shoulder. Lena turned to follow his gaze and saw the shadow figure standing at the edge of the clearing watching them.
"Blood of Ethan," she whispered, her blood running cold.
Before she could even flinch, there was Ethan in the light, smugly smiling over his face. "Did you really think it would be that easy, little sister?" he mocked.
And then realization hit Lena: there really had been a trap waiting. The level of betrayal was deeper than she had ever suspected, and the fight for survival had barely started.
Logan's eyes widened with disbelief and his grip on Lena's hand tightened. "We need to go, now!" he urged, but it was too late.
Ethan raised his hand, and a dozen Blackfang wolves emerged from the shadows, surrounding them. Lena's breath caught as she recognized the faces of those who used to be her friends, now twisted by loyalty to her brother.
"You see, Lena," Ethan sneered, "you never had a chance to win. This is my forest now."
So roused the beast within Lena, the anger and the fear commingled into one powerful force. She bore the full weight of the moon above in her eyes, which she locked with Ethan's.
"This isn't the end," she promised, her tone ripe with insolence. "I'll stop you, Ethan. Even if it costs me everything."
Ethan laughed long and hard as wolves closed in from all sides, leaving Lena with no alternative than to fight back with her life. Vengeance was on, and there was no turning back.
