Chapter 1 Marry him

"Gabby, come down quickly, or you'll be late for work!" Erica half-yelled, and a middle-aged lady rushed down from the stairs to the dining room.

She started with slices of bread and a sip of tea before standing up. She gulped down the hot tea. "Eat," David, Gabriella's father, David, pressured, and she shoved another slice.

"Eat more," David said, his voice stern and commanding. Gabriella rolled her eyes as she shoved another slice of bread into her mouth. She gulped down the hot tea and blew her parents a kiss as she ran out the door.

Gabriella hurried to her car and climbed in, starting the engine. It wasn't a fancy car, but it got her to where she needed to go.

At Great Times Newspaper company...

Gabriella ran into her seat, where a familiar face smiled at her from behind a towering stack of magazines to be edited, which she expected as an editor. "Late again, Gabby," Chris piqued, and Gabriella rolled her eyes.

"Oh, please, my parents forced me to eat, and I had too much to drink last night. I was feeling a little queasy," she retorted.

"Anyway, today is Wednesday, and you know what that means," Chris wriggled his brow.

"Arrrr... I hate Wednesdays." Wednesday was when she had to edit a lot of magazines and send them to the production team before they could make a final decision.

"You have to start early, though, if you want to finish before 4 PM," Chris reminded.

Gabriella turned on her system and was about to start her work when a call came in from her bestie, Becky. She picked up the call but immediately drew the phone from her ear due to the loud noise made by her bestie.

"Hello, bestie," a chipper voice squealed through the phone, making her wince.

"Here comes the biggest headache of the day," Chris groaned as he dropped the file on Gabriella's desk quietly. "What's with the shouting?" She questioned, going through the papers Chris had dropped.

"I'm sorry. I'm just so excited, bestie; I got the scholarship," Becky whined, and Gabriella could only smile.

"I'm proud of you, so I can get into trouble now because I have a great lawyer backing me up," Gabriella said, and Becky laughed.

"I'm less busy; let's celebrate during lunch or... Aww, I've forgotten today is Wednesday; sorry, babe; be quick with your work; we have to celebrate, bestie," Becky giggled.

"Alright, boo, I'll see you later then." Gabriella dropped her phone. "Now let's face this demon, Gabby." Gabriella said with a strict face.

Soon it was 5 PM and she was done with all her work, then she stood up, stretching.

"Thanks for grabbing my lunch earlier, Chris," Gabriella said with a smile.

"I'm so tired," Gabriella whined like a child. "Wow, you're a hardworking lady," Chris complimented, and she raised her hand up, which made Chris duck.

"How dare you, after all this paperwork?" Chris just smiled while Gabriella glared at him.

"I really wish I could kill you; by the way, I didn't see Lily today," Gabriella said as they glanced at the editing boss's office.

"I guess she had a lot to drink yesterday too," Chris winked, and Gabriella rolled her eyes.

"Bye, I have to meet up with my bestie," she quickly packed her bag.

"What you need is a good sleep, Gabriella," Chris said, and Gabriella sighed.

"I know; my bestie got her scholarship, so we gotta celebrate. Cover for me tomorrow too." Gabriella said with a wink while Chris rolled his eyes.

Gabriella and Chris walked out from their office, going to the elevator, when Gabriella's phone started ringing from her bag.

"I'm on my way, Becky," Gabriella said without taking out her phone. The elevator opened, and she stepped out, walking into the car park.

Gabriella was trying to locate her car when another call came in. She had no choice but to take it out to sweet-talk Becky, but she was surprised to see it was her dad, so she quickly picked up.

"Dad, what's up?" She asked casually, and the next word from her father made her freeze.

"What? Mom? In the hospital? What happened?" She questioned. "She needs to undergo surgery to take

"Dad, what's up?" She asked casually, and the next word from her father made her freeze.

"What? Mom? In the hospital? What happened?" Gabriella questioned.

"She needs to undergo surgery to take out the tumor completely, else she'd die," David cried. "Which hospital are you?"

"Warren hospital," David replied.

"I'm on my way."

15 minutes later, Gabriella arrived at the hospital and met with the nurse on duty.

"I'm here to see a patient, Erica," the nurse looked at her computer, "2nd floor, room 200." Immediately, she got the information; she ran to the room and saw her father crying outside.

"Dad, what's wrong?" She asked, trying to calm her raging heart.

"Gabriella, we don't have the money. We don't have 50 million dollars for the surgery. What should I do? Erica can't die. How will I live then?" Daniel cried, and Gabriella joined him.

A text came in on Gabriella's phone from Becky, but she ignored it and turned her phone off.

"My mom can't die," sh muttered. The Damien family went home that night, sorrowful, sad, in pain, and angry, but they all went to bed.

The next morning, Becky was the first person to knock on their door, angry because Gabriella bailed on her without knowing what her friend was going through. Daniel opened the door with a sad expression written all over.

"Child, what brings you here so early?" Daniel asked, surprised to see her, and led her in, then closed the door.

"What's wrong with your face, Dad?" Becky asked, concerned, and he sniffed.

"Erica needs surgery; I guess that's why Gabby didn't meet up with you yesterday," Daniel cried.

"Oh... I didn't know. We'll get through," Becky patted his back, "you'll all be fine soon, okay?" Becky comforted, knowing she couldn't do anything about it.

Gabriella dragged her body to work and back home, only to meet her parents eating and watching TV, which got her confused.

"Mom, what's wrong? Did you win the lottery? You're so happy; did you two prank me with the hospital news or what?" She asked, folding her arms and looking at her parents with a questioning gaze.

"I have good news," Erica replied, grinning. "The good news better be that you're getting your surgery," she said dryly, and Erica nodded.

"Freshen up first, then come down," Daniel said. Gabriella looked at his face like she was searching for the truth in his eyes.

Due to excitement, she went upstairs and came back after 10 minutes, wearing a comfortable outfit.

"Okay, what's the news?" "Well, we found a sponsor for my surgery," Erica said, and Gabriella blinked several times.

"Seriously?" She gasped, and Erica nodded.

"Seriously," she faced David, and he smiled. "Oh, that's great news," Gabriella rejoiced, squealing for joy.

"Well, there's a catch; he'll pay under one condition," Daniel revealed, and Gabriella breathed in and out.

"What's the catch?" Gabriella asked curiously, and they both gulped down their saliva.

"Marry him," David said, and Gabriella's eyes widened in shock.
