Chapter 1 Back to Square One

Magnus had just been sacked from the Nova Tech Systems company he worked for. He was on his way back home when his wife called. Laura Williams was married to Magnus when he was the managing director of the multi-tech systems company. Magnus wasn't only rich, but he was wanted by many women in Miami City. He was famous and popular in the tech industry.

Magnus had met Laura on one of his travels to oversee some business when he happened to meet her.

The meeting was intense, as both could not stop staring at each other. Magnus later asked Laura to marry him, and they both got married.

Everything had been going AWOL for Magnus ever since he lost

Favor with the owner of the company. For some reason, he was suspected of taking a very crucial part of the tech system.

Magnus had walked into the office of the CEO, an elderly man who looked sophisticated and rich.

The office of the CEO was a grandiose space that exuded luxury and power. The walls were adorned with rich, dark wood panelling, and the floor was covered with a plush, cream-coloured carpet that silenced every footstep. The ceiling was high and vaulted, with intricate mouldings that added to the sense of grandeur.

The CEO's desk was a massive, polished mahogany behemoth that dominated the room, its surface reflecting the light from the floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a stunning view of the city skyline. Behind the desk, a tufted, black leather executive chair seemed to be throne-like, as if it were reserved for a king.

The CEO himself was a tall, imposing figure in his late sixties, with a distinguished air about him. His silver hair was slicked back, revealing a prominent widow's peak, and his piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into those he looked at. His nose was straight and proportional to his other facial features, and his lips were thin and pressed together, giving him a resolute and unyielding appearance.

He wore a tailored, charcoal-grey suit that seemed to have been moulded into his athletic physique and a crisp, white dress shirt with a high collar that added to his already considerable stature. A simple, platinum watch adorned his wrist, and a slender, silver pen peeked out from his breast pocket, giving a glimpse into his meticulous and refined taste.

As Magnus entered the office, the CEO looked up from the papers on his desk, his eyes narrowing slightly as he regarded the younger man. His expression was unreadable, but his gaze seemed to convey a sense of disappointment and disapproval, as if Magnus had failed him in some fundamental way.

"I trusted you and made you what you have become today. Why would you go ahead and cheat on me? " Where is the system tech you stole?" The man asked with a stern gaze.

"System tech? " I don't know what you are talking about." Magnus looked at the man with such an expression that he didn't understand what he was talking about.

"Oh really? I guess what they say about you is true, then. I heard you have been parading yourself like you own the company. News flash, Magnus; you do not. " I am giving you just two weeks to find that tech, or I will have you arrested. " From now on, you are hereby fired!" the man shouted, pointing at the door and asking Magnus to leave.

Magnus couldn't believe his ears. He tried to plead his case, but the old man wouldn't just listen to him. Magnus head was down in shame as many of his coworkers looked at him and wondered what he had done. Some who were jealous of him whispered behind his back and laughed. "He deserved this. " He behaves like he owns the company," Tony, one of the staff members, said with a smirk.

Magnus walked into his office and stared around; he didn't believe it was going to come to this. The tech had been missing for a while now, but it wasn't Magnus fault. Magnus remembered that the technology was highly classified and that only he and the CEO had access to it, but the truth was that Magnus wasn't interested in the technology. He heard the CEO talking to one of the big guns in the country about using technology to become rich and the most influential man in society. One of the men even wanted him to sell it to him for a ridiculous amount of money.

Magnus loosened his tie as he sat down inside his car. His mind went back to Laura, and he wondered what he was going to tell her. He had been living extravagantly, and he wasn't even buoyant enough to afford what his wife had asked him to buy. Magnus knew Laura didn't love him when they married. It was all just for the money. He drove into an exquisite boutique and looked at what Laura had ordered. "Can I have this?" Magnus pointed to the perfume he was seeing. "That would be £34,000, sir." " Should I ring it up?" the lady asked, looking at Magnus, who was busy looking at his account balance.

He saw that he wasn't even buoyant enough to buy the perfume. He had bought a car recently for Laura's mother, making him spend half of his savings.

"Just leave it. I will come back for that later." Magnus looked at the lady and walked out. He scrubbed his head gently as he got into the car home. The thought of what he was going to tell Laura was all he could think about. He got home and met Laura and her mother in the dining room, wearing some jewelry. His eyes were wide open. "What are you doing?" Magnus asked, dropping the suitcase he was holding.

"Miss Lopez just got this jewel from Singapore. " I told her to buy me lots of them when she was coming." Laura replied, not even looking at Magnus.

"Babe, we need to talk," Magnus said, gently looking at Laura and her mother, who weren't paying any attention to her. "We need to talk, honey." Magnus said again, holding the brown envelope in his hands.

"Can you at least wait? " You can see I'm in the middle of something." Laura shut him off.

"I have been sacked." Magnus dropped the bombshell, and everything was quiet

Laura picked up the envelope on the table, looked at it, and then looked back at Magnus. "I heard already; don't tell me because you are going to pay for all of this."

Magnus looked at Laura and wondered how she was so unreasonable. "Did you hear what I just said?"

"Of course I did. " Don't tell me you don't have any savings, because you are useless to me if you don't." Laura answered back, and her mother laughed.

"I am sure Magnus is capable. Ain't you, Magnus?" Charlotte said with a grin, even making the atmosphere more tense.

"Did you know about this already?" Magnus looked at Laura and Charlotte, seeing that they were not surprised.

"Caspian told me already. Did you steal the tech? At least we can sell it and become rich." Laura looked at Magnus; she stood up, gently checking his body. "What are you doing?" Magnus, feeling frustrated, shouted at her.

"Just checking if you have the tech hidden somewhere." Laura replied.

"You don't trust me?" Magnus asked, surprised.

"Trust you?" Laura squeezed her face, even making Magnus more angry. He said nothing but simply walked into his room, leaving Laura and her mother in the lavish living room.

Magnus was feeling low on self-esteem, so he taken a quick shower and went to bed. He heard the squeeze of the door and immediately got up and into the lamp. He looked towards the door and saw Laura trying to sneak out of the house. "Where the hell are you going too?" he asked with a cold gaze, making Laura freeze.

"Do you think you have the right to ask me that?" Laura looked back at Magnus.

"Don't tell me you are going out dressed like that." Magnus rubbed his eyes, trying to see if he was seeing clearly.

Laura was dressed in a revealing and provocative outfit, seemingly prepared to go out for a night on the town. She wore a short, tight skirt that barely covered her thighs, paired with a low-cut top that exposed her cleavage. Her clothes were a stark contrast to her usual elegant and refined style, and Magnus couldn't help but wonder where she was headed in such attire. The outfit was more suited to a nightclub or a bar than a respectable evening out, and Magnus felt a pang of discomfort and concern. He realized that Laura was not only leaving the house without his knowledge or consent but was also dressing in a way that was unbecoming of her usual standards. Magnus felt a surge of anger and hurt, feeling that Laura was not only disrespecting him but also herself.

Laura looked at Magnus, even catching him unaware. She brought out a stick of cigarettes and lit it up. Magnus was surprised to see Laura smoking. Did she turn this way just because he lost her job, or has she been pretending all along?

Laura slammed the door on Magnus's face and walked out. Magnus remembered Caspian had called Laura about his job and wondered why he would have to call her. He took his phone and called him several times, but he didn't pick it up. Magnus fell back to bed with a sigh. He didn't only lose his job; he was losing his wife too.

The night went slowly as Magnus kept losing time on the wall clock as each hour went by. Laura strolled into the lavish mansion the following day and saw Magnus standing at the door. "Don't tell me you waited all night for me, loser." Laura said with a smirk, pushing Magnus out of the way.

"Did you just call me a loser?" Magnus asked in a surprised tone. And why are you surprised? Caspian is a better man than you are. At least he was able to keep his job, and you? " I don't know who you are anymore. " You are just some", Laura vomited even before she could finish her words.

Magnus said nothing but simply bowed his head in sorrow. The door was gently pushed open, and Charlotte looked at him. "Are you just going to stare at her? " Get to work!" She shouted at him.

Magnus got some clean towels and mopped the floor, taking care of Laura. He knew he would have to find out where the hell she had been. The thought of how he was going to get the tech before the deadline was all Magnus could think about.

He knew his boss was not making an empty threat when he asked for the tech back. Magnus's mind went back to who might have stolen it. He knew he and his boss only had access to it. The fear of prison was even scarier than Laura leaving him.

He looked at Laura on the floor and saw how wasted she was.

As he scrubbed the floor, he knew he would have to find out where the hell Laura went too.

******************************************************************

Days and weeks flew by with time ticking for Magnus. He needed to find the tech he was accused of stealing, and his wife and mother were beginning to treat him like trash. He was washing their clothes and even cooking for them. They had turned him into a complete houseboy. Laura doesn't have to sneak out of the house anymore. She was now brazen and went out of the house. However she pleased, without being checked by Magnus.

Magnus was at a loss; he remembered that he had signed the house will in the name of Laura, making her the sole owner of the house they lived in. He would have sent her packing, but he knew he couldn't do that. He decided to know who she had always gone to see every night she was out of the house. Magnus decided not to go in his car and took a cab, asking the chauffeur to follow behind Laura. " You don't need to drive fast, I just want you to tail the car from behind and follow it." Magnus said, looking at the chauffeur who was driving at a slow pace. His heart thudded as Laura took some bending. Magnus wondered where she was headed too, and he was ready to find out where the hell she was going.

As she drove, Magnus wondered where she was headed too. She dropped in front of a mansion, and Magnus face became pale.
