EXO was a prestigious music group from South Korea. S.M. Entertainment had officially launched a group of 12 male music artistes on March 31 and April 1st, 2012, at large-scale press conferences in China and Korea respectively. The group was divided into M team and K team. EXO was derived from the word exoplanet. The idea behind this was that they were new stars from an unknown world. After EXO was formed, K team, which would be active in Korea, and M team, representing Mandarin having a presence in China, were added.

They worked hard to gain popularity all over the world and gradually dominate the world music industry.

On December 22, 2011, S.M. Entertainment revealed the logo of the EXO group and its two sub-groups: EXO-K and EXO-M, on its official page. Both groups of newcomers would record the same song in Korean and Chinese at the same time on the same day, and also debut in Korea and China at the same time. The novel strategy for the debut generated a lot of buzz and curiosity among music lovers. The color of EXO brand was light green.

It was decided that the two teams would be made up of eight Korean artistes and four Chinese artistes, temporarily called M1 and M2. In order to find a theme song, S.M. Entertainment held a music summer camp in Denmark and Norway in August 2011. The company wanted to mobilize more than 50 famous musicians in the world but it was all in vain.

Finally, at midnight on December 23, 2011, EXO released its debut movie and photos and started revealing some of the members to the public. Eventually, the other members made their official debut at the SBS Singing Festival on December 29th.
