Chapter 1 Little Maya

Maya awoke to the soft light of dawn, the sky still painted in its deepest blues. The Ganges was still and silent, the ebb and flow of its waters a gentle reminder of the power and peace that lies within the river's depths.

Maya's grandmother, jaya, was already up, her silhouette still and serene as she meditated in the small garden by the river. Maya watched her grandmother for a moment before rising and joining her, taking in the beauty and stillness of the morning.

The two of them sat in companionable silence, watching the sun crest over the horizon and paint the sky with its inimitable orange and pink hues. Maya felt her breath soften and her mind clear as she basked in the peacefulness of the moment.

Finally, her grandmother stood and, without a word, gestured for Maya to follow her. Walking along the shoreline, Maya felt the coolness of the river as it caressed her feet. She looked up to see a large bird soaring in the sky, its wings spread wide against the backdrop of the stiller early morning blues.

Maya glanced at her grandmother, surprised to see a soft smile on her face. Her grandmother had made her way to the riverbank and was standing by a small boat, in which she had placed a few items and supplies.

Maya followed her grandmother as they slowly sailed up the Ganges. The stillness of the morning was only broken by the sound of the boat's engine, its low humming providing a gentle rhythm to their journey. As they sailed, Maya looked around in wonder at the beauty all around them. Majestic hills, lush vegetation and endless sky met her gaze as far as she could see.

They eventually arrived at a small island in the middle of the river. There Maya's grandmother tied up their boat and began to pluck lotuses from a nearby pond. She placed the delicate flowers into baskets and brought them back onto their boat.

Maya, adhering to her usual discipline, began to pluck the lotuses with care...these would eventually be transported back home to be sold off to tourists and devotees of the Kasi Mahadeva temple

Maya soon found herself helping her grandmother by carrying lotuses and weaving some of them together into beautiful garlands that she sold near the temple with her grandmother's blessing. With each sale, Maya felt a deep sense of pride and connection with her heritage and culture that she hadn't known before.

At night they returned home to their small village on the banks of river Ganges, enriched with a new appreciation for life's simple beauty and profound mysteries alike
