Chapter 1 BAD NEWS

Samantha couldn't remember or didn't want to recall the events leading up to this particular moment. she was getting married to a man she didn't even know, a man she had never met. However, she couldn't disappoint her family, or else that would be the end of her life because they would kill her, and no one would ever find her body.

It had only been last week when she heard the news. Her father called her into his office, a place she only visited when she was in trouble or when he needed her to dispose of some incriminating evidence against Donna, her sister, who always seemed to end up on the front covers of newspapers whenever Samantha failed to cover it up.

Entering her father's office that day after knocking on the door, she heard a faint "come in" from the other side.

Hello Father Samantha greeted, her gaze falling to the ground avoiding her father's.

I called you a few minutes ago. Why are you late? her father asked, his gaze fixed on the documents he was working on.

I apologize. When the maid came to call for me, I was in the bathroom, so I had to get dressed Samantha explained, looking up to see her father staring at her with disdain.

I have warned you so many times. When I call you, you come running. I don't care where or what you're doing. When I call you, you come running Samantha's father said, glaring at her.

Yes, Father, I apologize. It won't happen again Samantha said, her fear evident in her tone, knowing that wherever his anger was directed, it would likely end in physical punishment. She hoped and prayed that this wouldn't be the case.

I don't care for your apology. I called you for something else, David said, his gaze meeting hers again.

I'm all ears Father Samantha replied.

Your sister Donna is nowhere to be found, and she is supposed to marry a very powerful man. If she doesn't show up at the marriage, it will be our heads on the chopping block, her father explained, and Samantha listened intently, surprised that Donna was getting married. Why hadn't they told her? Oh yeah, they don't take her as a member of the family.

Do you want me to find her? Samantha asked, as her mind tried to think of places Donna could be hiding.

No, she left a note telling us not to look for her and that she is with the one she truly loves. She is against marriage; she doesn't want to marry someone she doesn't love, and I won't let my daughter marry someone she doesn't love. David explained, and Samantha mentally scoffed at her father as he referred to Donna as his daughter.

He had never called her his daughter even when her mother was still alive, back then it felt like he hated her but she thought it was all in her head, but after her mother died, he started showing his true colors, he would hit and call her names every time she made a mistake.

It became worse when Gina and her daughter came to live with them. That's when he told Samantha that Gina was going to be her new mother. Samantha didn't even know he had gotten married. This made Samantha sad because it happened when she was ten, and her life has been a living hell since then. Even after everything they had done to her, she couldn't bring herself to hate them because they were the only family she had.

"So, what are you going to do?" Samantha asked, her tone devoid of emotions.

We can't cancel the marriage, so you will have to marry him. You and Donna look similar, so we will be able to fool him until the marriage is over her father explained. and Samantha's face went pale.

What! Samantha exclaimed, staring at her father in shock.

Her mind reeled with disbelief as she struggled to comprehend the seriousness of her father's words. Marry a stranger? Pretend to be Donna? What the hell was he talking about? Can he hear himself talk? How can he fool a grown man into believing I was Donna? These questions flowed through her head as she continued to stare at her father in disbelief.

But... I can't just marry someone I don't even know, it's crazy for you to think we can fool him, it won't work father. Samantha protested weakly, her voice barely above a whisper.

You don't have a choice, her father replied coldly, his eyes boring into hers with a steely determination. It's either this or face the consequences.

Samantha's heart sank as the reality of what was going on sank in. She was trapped, ensnared in a web of her family's making. Fear, anger, and helplessness mingled in her chest, forming a knot of emotions she couldn't quite express. Even if he hates her, this was just too much, Samantha thought to herself as she stared at her father, whose face was devoid of emotions.

With a heavy sigh, she resigned herself to her fate. There was no use arguing with her father, he had made up his mind, and she was merely a pawn in his game of power and deception.

Fine, Samantha murmured, her voice barely audible even to her own ears. I'll do it.

It's not like you have a choice, you were going to do it whether you agreed or not, the wedding is in a week, get your affairs in order Her father said as he nodded curtly, satisfied with her compliance.

As Samantha walked out of her father's office, her mind raced with a whirlwind of thoughts. What awaited her in this marriage to a man she didn't know? How could she fool this man to avoid her family's wrath? Why did her father hate her so much to make her marry a man she didn't love or even know?

With each step she took, the weight of uncertainty bore down upon her shoulders like a large rock, threatening to consume her whole. Little did she know that the path she had chosen would lead her down a dark and treacherous road—one from which there might be no turning back.
