The clatter of the bus coming to a stop woke Elena Johnson from her daze. She blinked, her thoughts still tangled in the odd dream that had haunted her the night before-a mansion, endless hallways, and people she didn't recognize. Shaking her head, she gathered her belongings and descended the bus steps, greeted by the familiar sights of her bustling, modest neighborhood. It wasn't much, but it was home.
Elena worked as a waitress at Joe's Diner, a small but cozy place where she'd spent the last few years saving every penny she could. Life had never been easy for her. After her mother's death, she had taken on the weight of the world, determined to make something of herself despite the endless hardships.
As she pushed open the diner door, the familiar smell of coffee and frying bacon greeted her. She forced a smile, ready for another long day. But her mind lingered on the envelope she had received in the mail last night-an official-looking letter from a law firm she had never heard of.
"Morning, Elena!" Jessica, her best friend and colleague, called out from behind the counter.
"Morning, Jess," Elena replied, tying on her apron. "Anything exciting happen?"
"Same old, same old. But...you look like you've seen a ghost. Everything okay?" Jessica asked, concern in her eyes.
Elena hesitated for a moment, then pulled the letter from her bag, smoothing out the creases. "I got this yesterday. It's from some fancy law firm. I was going to throw it away, but...something made me keep it."
Jessica's eyes widened as she examined the letter. "You should open it! What if it's, like, an inheritance or something?"
Elena laughed, though the sound felt hollow. "Inheritance? From who? We barely had enough to keep the lights on when Mom was alive."
But Jessica was persistent, handing the letter back. "You never know. What if it's something important?"
Sighing, Elena reluctantly tore open the envelope. Her eyes skimmed the words at first, but then she froze.
Ms. Elena Johnson,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been named the sole heir to the estate of the late Mr. Edward Hartman...
Elena blinked, her heart pounding in her chest. Edward Hartman? Who was he? Why would a man she had never heard of leave her anything, let alone an estate? She skimmed the letter again, disbelief tightening her throat.
"Elena?" Jessica's voice was distant now, as if coming from underwater. "What does it say?"
Elena couldn't answer. She stood there, frozen, her mind racing. How could this be real? This had to be a mistake.
Without saying a word, she handed the letter to Jessica, who read it aloud, her voice trembling with excitement.
"You've inherited something. A lot of something, from a billionaire!" Jessica squealed. "Oh my God, Elena, this could change your life!"
Elena's legs felt weak. She sank into the nearest chair, her thoughts swirling. She had lived her entire life scrapping by, and now she was suddenly the heir to a fortune? It didn't make any sense.
Before she could process it, her phone rang, startling her. The name on the screen read Hartman & Co. Hesitating for a moment, she answered.
"Ms. Johnson?" a smooth, professional voice asked. "This is Olivia Daniels, Mr. Hartman's attorney. I assume you've received our letter."
