Chapter 1
Emma closed the door of her old car, her eyes glued to the small white house that stood in front of her. After long hours of driving from Florida, she had finally arrived in this small town in Texas, which still seemed strangely unknown to her. The hot, dry air enveloped him, so different from the familiar humidity of his native region. She breathed deeply, feeling both a thrill of excitement and a pang of uncertainty. She had promised her grandmother that she would take over the house and bring it to life, but now that she was here, the task seemed bigger than she had imagined.
She glanced at the boxes stacked in the back of the car. Inside, memories of a lifetime, objects that her grandmother had cherished and that Emma now inherited. She took the first box, the lightest, and pushed open the front door, which creaked open revealing a modest but welcoming interior. The furniture, although worn, exuded a rustic charm. She placed the box on the kitchen counter and looked around.
"Well, there you go, Emma. Welcome to your new home," she whispered to herself.
She then began to explore the place. Every corner seemed imbued with the presence of his grandmother, her memories and her love for this house. Her fingers slid gently across the polished wood of the living room table, and a nostalgic smile spread across her face as she imagined the many stories her grandmother must have told here.
As she opened a box to begin unpacking, she came across an old, yellowed envelope sitting atop the keepsakes. Intrigued, she took it and opened it delicately, her eyes settling on the neat cursive writing. The letter was dated decades ago. She read the first few lines, her heart pounding with curiosity.
"To whoever finds this letter..."
Emma frowned, scanning the next words, which seemed to be addressed to a certain "J.M.". The content remained enigmatic, evoking shared memories, whispered promises and a "great, impossible love" between her grandmother and this man from Texas. Emma felt her heart tighten. She had never heard of a lost love in her grandmother's life. Was this one of those secret stories that only old diaries and letters can reveal after years of silence?
She carefully folded the letter, holding it close to her, as if it contained a precious piece of history. This man spoken of...was he still alive? Or was he just a memory, a forgotten name in an old letter?
His attention was abruptly interrupted by voices coming from outside. She walked to the living room window and saw two people talking near the fence. One was a middle-aged woman with short, graying hair, dressed in a simple, colorful dress. Next to her, a man with an imposing build, a weathered face and a cowboy hat screwed on his head, seemed to be listening attentively. They turned their heads in the direction of the house from time to time, visibly curious about the arrival of the new neighbor.
Emma stood up, hesitant to go out and meet them. After all, she would probably come across them often, and she couldn't stay hidden forever.
She took a deep breath, quickly fixed her hair, then went out to greet them.
" Good morning ! » she said, approaching them, with a shy smile.
The woman turned around and gave him a broad smile, while the man looked at her with some curiosity.
"Well, hello, young lady! » the woman replied with a pronounced Texan accent. "You must be Mabel's granddaughter, right? We heard someone was taking over the house. »
Emma nodded, touched that her grandmother was so well known in the neighborhood. "Yes, my name is Emma. My grandmother told me a lot about this place, but this is the first time I have come here. »
"My name is Dolores, and this is my husband, Hank," the woman replied, extending her hand enthusiastically. Hank nodded in greeting, remaining silent but watching Emma's every move with a piercing gaze.
"Nice to meet you," Emma said, shaking Dolores' hand, then politely greeting Hank. "It's a little intimidating to be in a new place, but I'm looking forward to adjusting. »
"You'll love it here," Dolores enthused. "It's a peaceful place, and the neighbors are friendly. Your grandmother was a wonderful woman, you know. She loved telling stories, and she often made us apple pie... Oh, how I miss her."
Emma felt a rush of warmth upon hearing these words, imagining her grandmother chatting with Dolores, a mischievous smile on her lips. She suddenly felt closer to her, as if this community still bore her imprint.
"I miss her too," Emma admitted, her heart a little tight. "She seemed to really like it here. »
Dolores gently patted Emma on the shoulder, as if to comfort her. "You did well to come, my dear. And if you need anything, don't hesitate. Oh, and watch out for Hank, he's a little grumpy, but he has a good heart. » She gave her husband a mischievous wink.
Hank grunted in response, which made Emma smile. "That's good to know. Thank you for the welcome. »
"We're happy to have young people in the neighborhood," Dolores added with a kind smile. "And if you ever want coffee or just a chat, my door is always open. »
"Thank you, Dolores, that's very kind. »
Emma greeted them before returning home, her heart a little lighter. She almost felt at home, surrounded by such open and kind people. She knew this life change wasn't going to be easy, but she felt ready to take on the challenge.
Closing the door behind her, her gaze rested on the mysterious letter again. She was still hesitant to open it further, for fear of discovering something that would upset the image she had of her grandmother. However, the curiosity was too strong. She wanted to know more about this "J. M." and the story that seemed buried for decades.
As she was about to start reading again, her phone vibrated in her pocket. It was a message from Sarah, her best friend back in Florida.
**Sarah**: "Hey you! So, are you settled in? What's Texas like? Any sexy cowboys on the horizon? »
Emma laughed, shaking her head. Sarah hadn't changed, still ready to joke. She responded by sending him a photo of the house.
**Emma**: "For now, just a slightly dusty house and two nice neighbors. But I'll let you know if I come across an attractive cowboy ;)"
She smiled, feeling a little less alone. Then, gathering her courage, she took the letter back and decided to continue reading. The words spoke of intense love, shared feelings and broken promises. It seemed that her grandmother and this man had experienced something powerful, but for some unknown reason, they had to separate.
Emma felt her heart tighten. She wanted so much to ask her grandmother questions, to know who this man was, why they had left each other. Was he still in this town somewhere?
A feeling of intrigue mixed with a touch of melancholy. She realized how rich and complex her grandmother's life had been, filled with secrets and perhaps regrets. She sighed, gently closing the letter, determined to find out more.
