Chapter 1 Happy Moment

Abigail had just been admitted to high school and was sitting on the couch beside her mother, Sarah, who gazed intently at her daughter. Sarah watched Abigail with a mix of happiness and sadness, knowing that her daughter would soon be leaving for college.

Abigail was her only child, and Sarah cherished her deeply. Although Abigail was somewhat spoiled as an only child, she still maintained her dignity, bringing joy to her parents by remaining respectful and grounded.

"Abigail, I am so happy for you, but I'm going to miss you, my baby," Sarah said.

"Mom," Abigail replied, tears welling in her eyes. Sarah leaned closer and gently wiped the tears away.

With her recent acceptance into one of the best colleges, Abigail felt thrilled about leaving her neighborhood behind.

"We're going shopping for your clothes tomorrow," Sarah announced.

"Yes, Mom, we need to!" Abigail responded excitedly. "I need new clothing for college. I love you, Mom!" she exclaimed as she hugged her mother tightly.

Abigail's father had passed away when she was nine, leaving her in the loving care of her mother. "Your dad would have been proud of you," Sarah said through tears as they hugged once more.

"Mom, I'm hungry," Abigail said with a bright smile, trying to distract her mother from her sadness.

"Right, I need to head to the kitchen," Sarah replied. "What do you want?" she asked Abigail.

"A sandwich," Abigail answered.

With that, Sarah walked toward the kitchen to prepare the sandwich while Abigail headed to her room.

Abigail happily threw herself onto her soft bed, embracing its warmth as thoughts of college filled her mind. She pondered her new life and the friends she would need to make in a different country. As she thought about friends, she realized she hadn't heard from her old friend, Pearl.

Abigail and Pearl had been best friends from kindergarten through high school. Unfortunately, they couldn't attend college together because Pearl's parents had chosen a different school for her.

"I wish we could go to college together," Pearl had once said.

"Me too," Abigail had replied.

Abigail picked up her phone and called her best friend. As soon as the call connected, the two girls said in unison, "Best friends stay strong together." Abigail and Pearl had made that their slogan since high school, and they continue to use it to this day.

"Bestie," Pearl said on the other end of the line.

"Baby, I miss you," Abigail replied.

Pearl's parents were wealthy, using their influence and connections to help their daughter get into the best school. On the other hand, Abigail came from a middle-class family. They weren't rich or poor; they just tried to fit into the community, even though Pearl's mom had given her the best life possible.

"Pearl, I am distressed," Abigail said in a low voice.

"What's wrong?" Pearl asked, concerned.

"Let me guess: is it college?" she continued.

"Yes, yes, yes!" Abigail shouted over the phone.

"You will be fine," Pearl reassured her.

"I wish," Abigail murmured.

Pearl chuckled. "I'm going to miss you," she confessed.

"I know, right?" Abigail replied, and both girls laughed heartily.

"I don't know how I will cope with new friends here without you," Abigail admitted.

"Come on, it's easy," Pearl replied.

"Tell me about your college experience," Abigail inquired.

"Hmm," Pearl mumbled as she got ready to share her story.

Both girls chuckled, understanding the mood they were in.
