Chapter 1 Cruelty

In the kingdom of Merdrit, every man, woman and child knew what the face of cruelty was, it looked like a man with gray hair, had his clothes embossed, embroidered with lots of gold and long white hair just like his beard.

In this kingdom, everyone knew the smell of blood in the streets, everyone had seen at least three dead people in their life, everyone had felt fear, all because of him, all because of the man who had the face of cruelty. This cruel man was my father, Anthony, the king of Merdrit, since my childhood I saw my father do everything for his kingdom, including the most cruel and wicked acts a person could imagine, he became this way when my mother died.

My mother was a fair woman, I remember how she kept my father's sanity, she always advised him to be fair and kind to everyone, but one night a man came into the palace and committed a murder, he just went mad after losing the woman he loved. My sister was very little at the time, I was eleven, while she was only five, Elise barely remembered our mother's face.

Ten years ago, when my mother was buried, my father became convinced that she had been murdered at the behest of the ruler of the nearest kingdom out of envy for her prosperity, and so a war began that lasts to this day. The kingdom of Orni responded to his offensives, but not to the extent of my father's cruelty, some people from Orni were still passing through Merdrit at the time, when the war started my father began to hunt them down without any mercy, the captured people were executed in the public square as a warning sign so that no person from Orni would ever set foot in Merdrit again, so the whole continent was divided into two areas, like a line that they could never cross again.

My sister only knew the cruel and wicked side of my father, soon she ended up becoming an equally cruel person, during the executions she watched everything as close as possible, I could see in her eyes how much she enjoyed those visions, she watched each of the executions with a sadistic smile on her face, it scared me more than I had imagined, seeing my sister, who until then was just a child taking pleasure in death in destruction was a clear sign of danger, a sign that my father chose not only to ignore, but also to encourage. More and more I felt out of place in my own home, all that pain and destruction was not as enticing as it was for my father and sister, they soon realized this and excluded me from most of the kingdom's affairs.

I used to visit the villages, it was as if mourning was taking over the whole region, bandits ruled the streets, children barely grew up, their parents starved or were murdered, the poor children were left on their own, some didn't last long, others, the few that survived occupied the streets of the cities along with the bandits, creating a vicious and cruel cycle. My father just didn't care, he wouldn't stop until he wiped out the kingdom of Orni, all for an illusion in his own head.

The king had summoned me, it was a public meeting in front of the whole court, I didn't know what it was about, but I knew that if it was something of interest to the court I would be in bad shape.

"Lilia, when you are called to court I at least expect you, as the first princess of Merdrit to be an example of punctuality."

"I'm sorry my father, I was asked at short notice, I didn't even have time to prepare."

"Do you know why you are here?"

"I don't think so, my father."

"You are my eldest daughter, your mother was cruelly murdered before granting me a male heir, so it is obvious that you must marry so that our family legacy is maintained."

"I must marry then?"

"Yes, you must."

"And who would that be with?"

"We ally our power with the nearest powerful kingdom, so we can finally eliminate Orni once and for all."

"Are you really going to sell me to a stranger for a meaningless revenge? This will never end if it goes on like this."

"It's not a meaningless revenge, it's for your mother's death! You as the eldest daughter, the only one who remembers her, should know that more than anyone! This will end when the kingdom of Orni pays for what they did!"

"You don't understand father, the people of that time must already be dead, the younger ones are not to blame for what happened. You're just killing innocent people."

"I am speaking not only as your father, but also as your king! You will get married whether you want to or not!"

I was born 10 years after Queen Victoria took the throne, since then my mother tells, or rather imposes, the rules that aristocratic ladies must follow for me and my sister, who was 1 year older. In my house lived my mother Diana, my father Alfred, my brother Oliver, my sister Maya and myself, Grace, as well as the servants who took care of the cleaning and maintenance of the huge house in which I grew up. Maya's wedding, which was arranged by my father so that she would be an exemplary aristocratic lady like my mother as soon as she turned 19, but she didn't look happy at all. Weeks later, the ceremony took place, really beautiful, with roses for both sides of the altar, her future husband Paul waiting with a huge smile beside them and a stunning dress on Maya, but her countenance was still sad. Months after her wedding, Maya's husband decides to visit with her, but she didn't look like my sister anymore, her face was disfigured and her husband seemed enraged. Everyone sat down at the table and Paul began to rant that he had been deceived and that the woman he had been given could not beget decent heirs, since what he had managed to do with much effort had been lost while still in the womb. That same night, Mom enters my room and explains to me that Maya will be returned to our home, but before I can express any kind of happiness, she interrupts me with the sentence, "We have an agreement to fulfill and you will make sure that it is completed. You will marry Paul as soon as you turn 19" and simply walked away. I would not accept to marry that man, I had just turned 18, and I would only have one year to think of a way out of this situation.
