I settled into my king-sized bed, wrapping myself in my robe, and waited for Viola. She was taking her sweet time freshening up, but I knew it would be worth the wait. The thought of spending the night with her made me smirk.
Just then, she emerged from the bathroom, her damp hair cascading down her back and a towel precariously tied around her chest. She turned up the volume on the soft music filling the room, and her eyes locked onto mine.
With each deliberate step, her long legs moved seductively towards me. My anticipation grew as she drew closer. Finally, she bent down above me, her blonde hair spilling onto my face. I felt her warm breath dance across my skin, sending shivers down my spine as her delicate fingers traced tenderly across my chest.
Viola's lips grazed mine, followed by passionate kisses on my neck. Her silent moan in my ear sent my desire soaring. Despite the dim lighting, I couldn't help but notice her enticing cleavage.
Viola loved taking her time, and I was willing to let her set the pace. But my patience was wearing thin. Just as I grasped her waist, my work phone rang, ruining the moment.
"Sorry," I muttered, reluctantly pulling away.
Viola understood the importance of my work phone; only critical calls came through on that line. She hesitantly withdrew from our intimate moment.
I groaned in frustration as I walked to the table to answer the call.
I checked the caller ID; Ivan's name flashed on the screen. My curiosity piqued - Ivan, one of my most trusted men, wouldn't call unless absolutely necessary.
I answered, and his words crushed me. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "Hello? Hello?" I heard him say but I couldn't respond, before the line went dead. I was completely numb, my brain trying to process what I had just heard.
My legs gave out, and I slumped onto the bed, my heart racing. No, this can't be true, I thought, reeling in denial. But Ivan wouldn't lie; he wouldn't deliver such devastating news unless certain.
Viola sensed the sudden shift in my mood and approached me, worry etched on her face. "Is everything alright?" she asked, her tone laced with concern.
I met her gaze, and she looked horrified, probably because it was the first time she was seeing me in that state. "Marco's gone," I stammered, the words tearing from my throat. "All the cargo, my men...everything's lost."
Viola's eyes widened in shock. "What?! How? When?" she exclaimed.
Tears streamed down my face as the reality hit me like a ton of bricks. My twin brother, my only family, dead. The ache in my heart was suffocating.
I crumpled, overcome by grief. Viola rushed to my side, enveloping me in a comforting embrace.
"I'd like to be left alone," I told Viola, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Will you be fine on your own?" she asked, concern etched on her face.
I nodded, unable to meet her gaze. "Viola, please..."
She hesitated, then rose from the bed, casting one last longing glance before exiting the room.
Sleep eluded me that night. My brother was more than just family – he was my best friend, my confidant. My eyes wandered around the room, finally settling on a portrait of Marco and me. We were twins, identical in every way, except for the ash-blonde hair Marco had adopted to distinguish himself. Even then, people struggled to tell us apart, save for the single inch that made me the taller brother.
The night dragged on, each minute an agonizing eternity. Sleep remained elusive. As dawn broke, a sliver of sunlight peeked through the partially opened curtains, illuminating my face.
Determined to take action, I threw off the covers and dialed Ivan's number. "Assemble the men for an emergency meeting at the business villa. Now."
Downstairs, Viola looked up from setting the breakfast table, her eyes widening in surprise at my dressed-up appearance.
"Hey," she said, her voice tinged with curiosity.
"I need to go," I said gruffly, already heading for the door. "Wrap up what you're doing. I'll send someone to pick you up and drop you off."
With that, I left the house, leaving Viola behind.
My brows were furrowed as I wore a black suit, paired with luxurious crocodile leather shoes. I glanced at my wristwatch. Ivan must have done what I asked him. Putting on my sunglasses, my driver opened the passenger side of my car, bowing slightly. He closed the door before getting into the driver's seat and drove to the villa.
As he drove, my mind drifted. I had lost not only my brother but also a huge amount of drugs worth a fortune. I wasn't going to tolerate it. Smuggling drugs to different metropolises around the globe was my organization's specialty. We had recently added Chicago to our list, and surprisingly, it was booming; we were making a lot of profit.
Then we received an order. I had spoken to the drug dealer in Chicago and was going to deliver his goods myself, as we wanted to discuss future deals. However, I caught a cold a day before the operation, and Marco insisted on going instead. "He won't know it's not you; I can handle it," Marco had said. "I'll manage."
"Traveling from Italy to Chicago isn't advisable in your current state," he pointed out, and he was right. I had jokingly called him a doctor. Things weren't supposed to go so wrong.
Tears trickled from my eyes, and I quickly dabbed them off with my handkerchief.
We arrived at the villa. I stepped inside and saw all my men assembled, their faces filled with sorrow as they acknowledged my presence. I took a deep breath before taking my seat.
"Ivan, please give us all the details you have concerning the huge loss," I said, trying my best to compose myself and hide my pain.
Ivan stepped forward, his voice laced with sorrow. "Gentlemen, I regret to inform you of a devastating loss. Marco, the dealer, and our comrades in the vehicle perished in a tragic accident during the recent operation in Chicago."
"The car's fuel tank leaked, causing a fire that consumed everything," Ivan continued. "I received the news two days ago, but I wanted to verify the facts before sharing. The police won't find anything incriminating; the fire reduced the goods to ashes."
I rose, my heart weighed down by grief. "Ensure their remains are brought here by the end of today. Let's pay our respects."
"We will observe a two-minute silence to honor their memory," I added.
The room fell silent as we stood, bowing our heads in unison. The weight of our loss hung in the air.
As my men departed, I instructed Ivan and Lucas to remain. "I need every detail surrounding this incident," I said, my tone firm.
"I've told you everything, Don," Ivan replied.
But my mind refused to settle. The incident nagged at me, refusing to compute as a mere accident. One moment, everything was fine; the next, everything and everyone was gone. It defied logic.
My years in this treacherous business had honed my instincts, allowing me to distinguish accidents from calculated moves. Still, I knew better than to act solely on intuition.
I broke free from my thoughts, heaving a sigh. "You both can leave and work on bringing their remains."
As I turned to return to my seat, Lucas spoke up, his voice cautious. "Sir, there's something else. A woman who owns a stall near the accident site claims to have heard gunshots before the crash."
My head snapped up, "What?!" I exclaimed, alarm etched on my face. "And why didn't you tell me this until now, Ivan?"
Ivan shifted uncomfortably. "I didn't think it was relevant, sir. The woman suffers from dementia, so her testimony isn't reliable."
My fury ignited, eyes blazing with intensity. I walked up to them facing Ivan, my voice low and menacing. "Your job is to report every detail, no matter how insignificant. I decide what's relevant."
I stressed each word, ensuring they understood. "Do I make myself clear?"
Ivan and Lucas exchanged nervous glances before responding in unison, "Yes, sir."
I pinned them with a piercing gaze. "Any other information?"
They hesitated before Lucas spoke up, "None, sir."
My expression remained stern. "You both may leave."
They quickly exited the room, leaving me to ponder in my thoughts.
This new revelation validated my instincts; the incident was undoubtedly a premeditated act. Despite the woman's mental instability, I couldn't ignore this crucial lead. Ivan and Lucas's near-omission of this detail had shaken my trust in them. I couldn't delegate this task; I had to take matters into my own hands.
Chicago beckoned, and I knew I had to leave very soon to unravel the mystery. Only a cunning mastermind could orchestrate such a sophisticated plot and someone in my organization definitely sold my men off. A burning desire for vengeance coursed through my veins as I contemplated the challenge ahead.
