Loana clenched her teeth and adjusted the scarf around her neck as the raindrops pelted her face harshly. Her younger brother, Vlad, was at home, feverish and weak, and she couldn't leave him alone. Even though her mother had been working as a maid at Mr. Ionescu's mansion all morning, Loana knew she couldn't wait any longer. The boy needed care, and her mother would never make it home in time.
With a knot in her stomach, Loana quickened her pace. She knew it was risky, but she couldn't let her brother suffer without help. From the street, she saw the grand mansion, its imposing stone facade and velvet-draped windows, a reflection of the wealth that seemed within reach of only a few. Even though her mother had worked there for years, the mansion remained an unknown world to her, filled with secrets and invisible rules.
At the end of the path leading to the mansion, Loana quickly glanced back to make sure no one had seen her. She slipped into a small ivy-covered side passage, where the maids entered and exited unseen by the aristocratic family. This was her only way in, one where she was never meant to be seen. She entered cautiously, taking a deep breath, and slid through the narrow service corridor, feeling the dampness of the walls against her fingers.
The sound of her footsteps was swallowed by the darkness. Every corner of the hallway, filled with old portraits and marble statues, seemed to whisper forgotten stories of the Ionescu family. Loana moved forward, her heart pounding, hoping her mother wasn't far. But as she passed one of the doors, a burst of laughter echoed in the air.
Loana froze. She recognized the voice. It was Mihai, the son of the mansion's owner, the young heir of the Ionescu family. Loana clenched her fists, afraid he had heard her, and tried to move more stealthily, but as she stepped back, she tripped over a vase that crashed to the floor with a loud noise. The sound reverberated through the hallway, and a second later, Loana felt Mihai's presence behind her.
-"What do we have here?"- Mihai said with a mocking smile. Loana turned, seeing him standing in the doorway of the room, his dark eyes fixed on her with a mix of surprise and amusement.
Unable to hide her embarrassment, Loana quickly tried to apologize, her voice trembling:
-"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... I didn't mean to cause trouble. I'm just looking for my mother, she's in the service staff."
Mihai studied her intently, his expression shifting between irritation and curiosity. His posture of arrogance, the one Loana had often seen from her place on the street, was clearly present. She felt her face flush under Mihai's gaze. The class difference was evident in the simple fact that he didn't even recognize her as someone from his own world. She was just a servant, a girl who only had the right to exist on the margins of the mansion's luxurious world.
-"What are you doing here?"- he asked, his tone leaving no room for doubt: he wasn't used to being addressed in such a way.- "Did your mother let you in without permission?"
Loana looked down, ashamed. She didn't want to admit the truth, but she also didn't want to lie. She had no choice but to answer.
-"I didn't want to bother anyone... my brother is sick, and I couldn't wait any longer."
