Chapter 1 The Beginning

"Hurry up Ny! You're going to be late!" My mother shouted from the bottom of the stairs. "I'm coming right now!" Quickly, I grabbed the rest of the clothes that I got from my best friend and stuffed them inside my book bag. This was my first day in high school and I couldn't be caught no where with the holy t-shirt I had on and hand me down jeans that I've gotten from my older brother before he went to the military a few years back.

I flew down the stairs only to notice that my mom was sitting on the sofa, half naked, smoking a cigarette while watching tv. The smell of the cigarette made my stomach turn for the worst. While covering my nose with my t-shirt, I stepped in front of tv. "Mom, I thought you was taking me to school?" "Girl get yo ass out my way! They about to read the results on Maury!! And I know he ain't the father!" She started laughing while taking another pull of her cigarette." "Ma, how I'm supposed to get there?" "Walk!" she shouted while trying to move me out the way so she can see the results. "Ma, the school is well over 5 miles. Can you at least give me some money so I can catch the bus?" "Ha! I knew he wasn't the father!" while taking another sip of her beer. She looked at me impatiently and took a deep breath while sitting up in the chair. "Look, I only got 5 dollars left to my name. I haven't got paid yet and when I do, you know I wont have anything left over because I have to pay rent. You have to start waking up earlier cause' I work mornings all next week." She digged in her bra and handed me a sweaty folded up five dollar bill. I screwed up my face while reaching for the money. "Ew ma, why you always put money in there?" Smoking her last drag of the cigarette, she put it out in the ashtray, blew the smoke in the air and replied "Girl, you want the money or not?" I put the money inside my back pocket and flew out the door.

I quickly dialed my best friend's number. "Yessir?" "Kenya were you at? I told you to meet me down the street at the gas station. Was you able to sneak your mothers car?" "Calm down hoe! I'm pulling up right now." The sound of her moms engine was so loud, I can hear it coming from down the street. It was an old Honda civic that was about to break down any day now. "Damn, I thought you said your mom was getting a new car?" I said while getting inside and beginning to switch my wardrobe. "Bitch you can catch the bus!" While laughing she continues to say "my mom ain't get the approval for the loan so she stuck with this until she finds a co-signer". "Did she ever come back home from the other night?" "Hell no! She still with her "new customer". He had her since Friday and I'm tight because I had to call out of work and watch Kali on Sunday."

Kali was her 2 years old baby sister. Kenya is 2 years older than me and a junior in high school. We've been best friends for over 10 years. She always have my back and act like my older sister. "How I look?" I asked while adding my finishing touches to my hair. I slicked back my hair in a messy bun while putting two curls in the front. I had on a white crop top and high wasted jeans with some white flip flops. "Damn girl, you looking like a snack right now. Finally I get to go to school with my sissy! Them boys gonna be all over you. I need to let you know who to talk to and who to ignore." She stated smiling from ear to ear like she just won the lottery. She kept going on and on about Abbott High school and her voice was slowly fading away when we was pulling up to a red light moments away from the school and immediately, I noticed a tall dark cute guy with dreads about to cross the street. He was with 2 other guys wearing varsity jackets. I assumed they were all seniors and he was way out of my league. "Ayo Brandon! Think fast!" Another guy yelled with the same varsity jacket as the other 3 guys were wearing from the opposite side of the street. He threw the football towards them at full speed. Suddenly, the cute boy ran into the street to catch the ball. While noticing that the throw was short, he stopped running for the ball and made an excruciating pain face when he noticed what was about to happen next.
