Chapter 1 Late For work

Grhhh grhhhh grhhh

The alarm went off, bringing Estelle out of dreamland. She slowly sat up in bed, her head was banging like she had been struck by a hammer.

'What says the time?" Her hand over her mouth to stop herself from yawning, she turned to look at the peacock-shaped wall clock. She gasped.

"Mr. Kyle's going to have my head for breakfast," Estelle dashed into the bathroom and in less than two minutes she was out. Luckily, the night before she had ironed the clothes she'd wear to the office. There was no time for her skincare routine this morning. Applying her lotion, doing her makeup and getting dressed didn't take her up to ten minutes, she grabbed her bag, her shoes and her house keys then she dashed out of the house.

Her cab driver was outside waiting, she got in.

"Drive like your life depends on it" She didn't bother to exchange greetings, there was no time for that.

A journey of twenty minutes was reduced to ten minutes, the driver had sped through traffic like someone who was being chased by the police. Luck was definitely on their side, they almost got fined but they were lucky enough to get off with a stern warning because the officer on duty was a friend of hers.

The taxi came to an abrupt halt in front of the huge gates of MCcaffray limited, throwing Estelle onto the dirty floor. She got her disoriented self out of the taxi, that was her punishment for making him race through traffic like he was driving an ambulance not a taxi.

For someone who was in a hurry and had been thrown onto the floor of the taxi, she looked breathtaking. Her jet black hair that was curled at the tip cascaded down her back. She caught a glimpse of herself in the cab's mirror, she looked stunning in her well-tailored and ironed black jacket and trousers that she matched with red bottom heels.

"Good morning, Miss Racheal," Estelle picked up the pen to write down her name. It was mandatory for every worker to check-in. It didn't come as a surprise to her when she saw that she was the last person to do so.

"Mr. Kyle is in his office and he doesn't look pleased with the fact that he's in the office and his personal secretary is at home," Rachael told her. "I hope you have a backup plan because Mr. Kyle is going to fire you, I'm sure of it" Rachael smile with an air of certainty.

Why did every think being Mr. Kyle's personal secretary was a good think? Sometimes, she wished they'd have a day where everyone swapped positions so that they'll know what feels like working one on one with him.

Estelle, stood in front of the door for five minutes thinking of a believable excuse before walking into the office. What if I tell him I'm sick? No, Mr. Kyle would find out the truth. I'm a bad liar, once Mr. Kyle starts questioning me, I'll end up blurting it out and this will only add to my problem. In the end, she went with the truth, summoning up the courage she knocked.

"You sure five minutes is enough time to wait by the door like you have the whole day before you knock?" I do hope you've come up with a legitimate excuse for coming late?

That was his way of telling her to come in. Sometimes, she wondered if the door was transparent, he always knew when she was standing outside.

Mr. Kyle had back turned to her. The blinds were up, he was staring outside. This was something he did when he was angry, a sign that he was not in a good and was only looking out of the window to calm himself down pending the time the person who had annoyed him would show up so that he would pour out his anger.

"Good morning sir,"

The greeting was followed by an awkward silence that made her uneasy. She undid a button, in an air conditioned room, she was sweaty.

After what seemed like forever, kyle turned. He took a seat, took a good look at his wristwatch before he lifted up his eyes to meets hers. His cold eyes holding her gaze until she forced to look away. Those deep blue eyes knew how to instill fear into someone.

"Every employee has a copy of the company's rule and what is the most important one, Miss Estelle?'

"Every employee is supposed to be at the office by 8.......am," she replied.

He pointed at the wall clock, it was ten minutes to ten. She swallowed hard.

Estelle knew going to the club with her friends would make her show up late at the office but she couldn't say no to her friends.

"Estelle, you're always working, every time we invite you out, your replies are "so sorry girls, I have some work to do this night but I'll make it up to you some other time.' They mimicked her. "Just this time, come party with us besides its Nancy birthday and she wants you to be there." They coerced her until she gave in.

Besides, it was just one night and she had to make up for all the invites she had turned down just because she was sorting out files, going through emails and doing work related stuff for Mr. Kyle. A drink was all she was going to have to avoid waking up with a crazy hangover but the girls had other plans.

They made sure that Estelle got drunk, they believed that if your drunk ass was not being carried out of the club by your friends who weren't as drunk as you were, If you're puking in the toilet when you get back home, or if you don't wake up with a hangover that makes you feel like your head is about to explode, then you didn't have fun at the club.

"You don't get paid to sit at home and then show up at the office whenever you feel like," He said sternly. 'A lot of people out there would do anything to earn what I pay you so don't be too comfortable cause I can replace you in a minute. She knew that wasn't an empty threat.

"I'm sorry sir,"

"Save your apologies and while you are at it, go get me a cup of coffee." He took a seat, picked up the magazine on his table. "We have a meeting with the board to discuss our new products, I do hope you have ideas?

"Yes sir,' she dropped her laptop on the desk. " I'll go get your coffee.
